The surprise for me was that the M2 feels like and looks like the traditional BMW M coupe. The M4 looks and feels like a German take of an American Muscle car. A real stark contrast.
Whoever specced that M4 should be shot at dawn. M4 is probably a great car but I couldn’t get past that awful front end. That alone would stop me buying one. Interior looks ok but BMW really have lost something. Gone is the restrained style of earlier cars. M2 looks better but still a little out of proportion to me.
I was recently driving the Sebring (which was a GT of the era, by todays standards it's a small car) with my son & we were noting how cars are getting bigger every year & I told him I'd had a few M3's in the past but the current ones are getting too big, I said do a google on his phone comparing say an E36 or E46 to a current M3/M4 (sizes were so different, the Mini vs current Mini was crazy), the current 3's & 4's are the same size as the old 5's, 5's are like old 7's, same with Audi's & Benzes, they've all just bigger & expanded there model range with more cars, IMO if you want a sporty & nimble BMW its got to be an M2 now as the others are just getting too big & heavy.
Apparently, it’s the launch colour spec. I agree the front is terrible but it surprisingly grows on you. I could never spend my money on one, would never buy a used one because of maintenance but I get surprised by the sheer technology that goes into these cars. You think it can’t get faster or more tactile and then bang, it does and in only a handful of years. I would always take the classic option but I see the appeal in these moderns if you rapidly turn them over, a position that I would unlikely be in.
My brother in Adelaide has a modded black e82 M135i and its amazingly compact and nimble, like a traditional M car. He’s drives it quite aggressively and the way you can thread that car through traffic and down a road is really impressive, all due to its size.
You know Steve, when I think about modern car styling, which I generally don’t find appealing, I always remind myself of the Testarossa. When that car was released in 1984, it really polarized opinion. It’s styling was very controversial and it was a big big car for its time. Still is. I was 15 years old at the time and I distinctly remember that I much preferred Boxer or Daytona that proceeded it, by a long shot. I thought Ferrari lost the elegance, poise and compact nature of its predecessors. However, a few years later, my opinion started to change and although I would still much prefer a Boxer, I think the Testarossa is a fantastic looking thing. It took a while for me to get my head around the change in styling and philosophy of the car. So when I see new car, I try to be open minded about these things. New ideas may not always be better, but it’s great that people still try to explore them, even if they turn out to be dead end.
Huge depreciation awaits and they look like sh!!t Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Fair enough, Rennie. I’m not anti new things at all. Far from it. But a huge part of any car for me is it has to look good to my eyes. Or at least not ugly. I’m a BMW fan - have had several and loved them all except the X5 - but I just can’t come to grips with this new grille. it really is totally fugly and I won’t buy another one until they change that styling, no matter how good the rest of the car may be. I think their current interiors are not bad - better than Benz but not as nice as Audi - but I don’t think they’ve done a great job with the digital dash. I actually think that’s done better in my Golf! Having said all that, I’d have an Alpina B3 wagon in a heartbeat. Great looking, no stupid grille, plenty of performance and nice inside.
Completely agree. The new G20 Touring is a great looking car. Very difficult car to procure at the moment. They sell every single one. I think perhaps wagons are becoming popular again in Australia. In Germany, wagons make up 20% of the market and SUVs are despised apparently.
Crap styling in a car is like a dog turd: as time goes by, they don't stink as much, and they get easier to pick up, but they're still a dog turd
Yeah, right. I’m not a fan either, much rather a wagon if I needed extra space. Silly signature here to annoy KIAI
They actually go around corners amazingly well also. As far as I’m concerned the majority of modern cars are just appliances anyway...
