All but five US Senate Republicans have voted in favour of an effort to dismiss Donald Trump's historic second impeachment trial, making clear a conviction of the former president for "incitement of insurrection" is unlikely.

While the Republicans did not succeed in ending the trial before it began, the test vote on Tuesday made clear Mr Trump still has enormous sway over his party as he becomes the first former president to be tried for impeachment.

    He's doing a terrific job

US President Joe Biden has signed a raft of executive actions to combat climate change, including pausing new oil and gas leases on federal land and cutting fossil fuel subsidies, as he pursues green policies he billed as a boon to the economy.

The orders, signed on Wednesday local time, map out the direction for the Democratic President's climate change and environmental agenda.
They mark a reversal from policies under his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, who sought to maximise US oil, gas and coal output by removing regulations and easing environmental reviews.
"In my view, we've already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis," Mr Biden said at a White House ceremony, as he noted the threats the nation faced from intensifying storms, wildfires and droughts linked to climate change.

Well I guess that does it for the storms, wildfires, and draughts.

Meanwhile, less CO2 from the plebs means John Kerry can continue to operate his Gulfstream, and multiple mansions.

They complained when Trump did it...... Yet....

In his first week in office, President Joe Biden whipped up 24 executive orders — a lot more than his contemporaries.
Donald Trump signed four, Barack Obama signed five and George W Bush signed none in the first seven days.

I hate how they refer to impeachment as some sort of declaration of guilt!

Members of George W Bush's administration leave Republican Party, calling it 'Trump cult'

Dozens of Republicans from former president George W Bush's administration are leaving the party, dismayed by a failure of many elected Republicans to disown Donald Trump after the deadly storming of the US Capitol last month.

    Key points:
Some Republicans have ended their party membership, others are letting it lapse or are newly registered as independents
Roughly 60 to 70 former Bush officials have reportedly left
Republican officials have recently indicated they are "having a spat" within the party at present
The officials, some who served in the highest echelons of the Bush administration, said they had hoped that a Trump defeat would encourage party leaders to move on from the former president and denounce his baseless claims that the November presidential election was stolen.

But with most Republican politicians sticking to Mr Trump, these officials say they no longer recognise the party they once served.

Some have ended their membership, others are letting it lapse, while a few are newly registered as independents, according to a dozen former Bush officials who spoke with Reuters.

"The Republican Party as I knew it no longer exists. I'd call it the cult of Trump," said Jimmy Gurulé, who was undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence in the Bush administration.

Kristopher Purcell, who worked in the Bush White House's communications office for six years, said roughly 60 to 70 former Bush officials had decided to leave the party or are cutting ties with it.

Why is Joe Biden signing so many executive orders?
Five questions for Biden's biographer a week into the US President's first term
"The number is growing every day," Mr Purcell said.

The party is currently caught between disaffected moderate Republicans and independents bothered by the hold Mr Trump still has over elected officials, and Mr Trump's fervently loyal base.

Without the enthusiastic support of both groups, the party will struggle to win national elections, according to polling, Republican officials and strategists.

The Republican National Committee referred Reuters to a recent interview its chair Ronna McDaniel gave to the Fox Business channel.

"We're having a little bit of a spat right now. But we are going to come together. We have to," Ms McDaniel said, predicting the party would unite against the agenda of President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

Representatives for Mr Trump did not respond to a request for comment.

A representative of former president George W Bush did not respond to a request for comment.

During the Trump presidency, Mr Bush made clear he had "retired from politics".

    'It's appalling'
More than half of the Republicans in Congress — eight senators and 139 House representatives — voted to block certification of the election just hours after the Capitol siege.

Most Republican senators have also indicated they will not support the impeachment of Mr Trump, making it unlikely that the former president will be convicted in his Senate impeachment trial.

Mr Trump was impeached on January 13 by the Democratic-led House of Representatives on charges of "incitement of insurrection".

He is the only president to be impeached twice.

The unwillingness by party leaders to disavow Mr Trump was the final straw for some former Republican officials.

"If it continues to be the party of Trump, many of us are not going back," Rosario Marin, a former treasurer of the US under Mr Bush, said.

"Unless the Senate convicts him, and rids themselves of the Trump cancer, many of us will not be going back to vote for Republican leaders."

Two former Bush officials who spoke to Reuters said they believed it was important to stay in the party to rid it of Mr Trump's influence.

One of those, Suzy DeFrancis — a veteran of the Republican Party who served in administrations including those of former presidents Richard Nixon and George W Bush — said she voted for Mr Biden in November.

But she believed breaking the party apart now would only benefit the Democrats.

"I totally understand why people are frustrated and want to leave the party. I've had that feeling for four years," Ms DeFrancis said.

But she said it was critical the party unite around Republican principles such as limited government, personal responsibility, free enterprise and a strong national defence.

I wonder how many young women voted for Biden because he "supports women" more than that "******" Trump.

I wonder how long Biden will keep working at his current op-tempo.

I thought he was going to be a “sleepy Joe” however he is out-trumping Trump on signing executive orders for stuff he said he’d do if he became POTUS

I wonder if he’ll actually be able to get any of his “agenda” passed through both levels of government given dissent within the Dems and GOP

I also wonder if the influence of Trump is going to help or hinder the GOP success at the mid-term elections

Biden doesn't write the executive orders, he just signs what is put in front of him.

IMO very little legislation will get through both houses. Like Obama, he'll govern by executive order.

Also like Obama, the mid-terms will see a big swing back to the GOP. Rising unemployment and energy prices will guarantee it.

I hope so, but it will depend on whether anything is done to tidy the voting / vote counting process in the next two years.

If not, expect to see more vertical lines on vote count graphs...

Mark my words, people will regret voting for him. Many already do. Hitting them in the hip pocket is a guarantee.
