Indeed....... But worse, you can't drop a car while you're parking it. Well.... not usually Image Unavailable, Please Login
It has a few problems from not being ridden - the back carby could do with a rebuild, so I'll do them both. The fairing and seat need to be put back on. The prev owner had a spare seat made with more padding, which was just as well, because the bike transport guy tore the upholstery during delivery. And a few minor bits and pieces to do.
All the MHR's were road bikes. Mine was released at 9.5:1, later ones were 9.3:1 and then 9.2:1 for the Mille. At 12:1, I really would break my leg trying to start it
That's a good thing. Really important that you have the timing spot on and the carbs synchronised. Also, keep your knee bent in case it kicks back.
I started a 450 Duc single a while ago, took about 10 kicks, I was too knackered to ride the bloody thing.
I had one when I was 17. Starting it was a nightmare. Often just push started it. Loved it though. My first Ducati.
I think the problem also is leaving modern fuel sitting in a carby for months on end. It breaks down to a goo and takes a long time to flush through. Doesn't seem to bother injected engines, probably because there isn't fuel sitting in a float bowl. On a big single, you only get one firing stroke per kick, so when they don't want to start, you're there for a lot of kicks.
Well, that wasnt the problem in my case. It was just a bastard to start. Great photo hey? I didn't use my mobile! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yep, constant problem if a carby car is allowed to sit . Main issue with older cars on points , is they just don't have enough spark to burn that mixture called modern fuel , those on electronic ignition don't seem to have the issue..just more spark?
I don't have an issue with the '71 Corniche with modern fuels even-though she is on points and running the higher compression 9 to 1 pistons and the early higher lift camshaft...well maintained or just luck? Be interested to know Carl's thoughts on the modern fuel and older cars on points? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yep the MHR fires up on one cylinder for a bit until they both kick in - I'm assuming it's the back carby. I'm also assuming I can rebuild a 40 year old Dell'Orto - what could possibly go wrong?
