...I'm not sure if that's the proper name for it, but I remember back in the '80s and early '90s various shops, including I believe, FAF in Georgia would sell these rubber strips that you'd stick in the grooves that run along the sides of the car. These would sit proud of the body and protect it from door-dings.

Does anybody still make these and sell them? Without really knowing or remembering the name for this, it's been hard to search for this online.

    Thanks.

Does anyone take their 308 to the grocery store and park it next to King Ranch F150's to pick up a quart of milk?

Mang just posted and found the end caps for the system, I don't know the brand name but it was a dealer add....for me I would rather repair and reshoot the paint.

    But send Mang a PM

    1) Was that the question I asked?

    2) To be perfectly honest, yes, that is the intention. I am thinking of buying a 328 and it will be used as a daily driver (year-round, within reason. Not in snow, but all other weather conditions).

Thanks, I’ll send him a note. BTW, my GT4 got a lot of thumbs up from panhandlers around these parts...

    He's a solution I use.

Rather then modify the car I have two firm foam strips stuck to either side of my garage walls so I can open the doors all the way out- the doors hit the foam instead of hitting the solid walls.

Then I just make sure I park the car in a safe place away from other cars in a car park or just parallel park in order to avoid side dings from other cars.

    Problem solved !!

No offense meant but that looks like something they ordered out of JC Whitney and jammed into the groove.

Agree, and I'd be surprised if it doesn't take off the black paint underneath when it comes time to remove it.

I've seen those strips on various cars when I worked at a Ferrari shop. Personally, I think they look atrocious... but, to each his own I suppose

    Thanks buddy.
    It's a 100 point concourse car.
    Completely original.
It's won me a few awards over the years. :)
And gets driven... about 600 km per year.

When we bought our 308, it had the protectors. Still does after 22 years. Someone had traded a Lusso in for our car at FAF. They may have installed them.

I have the same on my 85 308. The inserts were created by Steve Ahlgrim while he was sales manager at FAF. He saw the parts at a boat dealership and realized they would fit the groove on a 308 or 512 boxer. If you have them, your car probably passed through FAF in the late 80's or early 90's.

When we got our 308, they were on it and looked so natural, I assumed they were factory. I then saw other cars without them. They make sense to me! Somehow I am not surprised Steve was involved.

To be completely honest, despite any opinion on the aesthetics, they look like they would do what they're supposed to do.

Interesting idea about boat bumpers. Unfortunately I'm not finding anything that looks like it is quite right. A lot of hollow ones, some are "D-Shaped" which might be fine, perhaps requiring plugs. I don't know how hard one would want them to be.

Ultimately it would have to look like it was "Factory", rather than just some foam stuffed in there.

One could, of course, cut to size, then polish the rubber if it was a quality product.

There are a number of castable rubbers that should be fairly easy to make, once the forms are made. One could tint to various colors, but getting a perfect color match would be difficult (thus black or dark grey to match other trim parts). If casting, one could also create it with any shape desired.

Unfortunately I don't have a 308 at this time. I've been watching a couple of auction cars, but I have no idea what the prices will be.

    I have always liked them.

I've been told it was Steve Ahlgrim's idea while at FAF.

I know for a fact they are functional as they have saved my 308 from some serious door dings back when I was driving the car on a regular basis.

Honestly you really do not notice them until you are up really close. I also happen to like them.

Thanks to everyone continuing to post in this thread. I've been away from F'Chat for a while, so I wasn't aware of the continued discussion.

And a comment like yours, Arthur, really reinforces my idea to either get a set, or find something similar. I would be driving on a regular, daily basis and anything to protect the body, would help.
