I went out to Hoosier Tyres in the north west of Sydney this afternoon to get a new set of tyres fitted for Phillip Island. They're located on the north side of where the Amaroo race circuit used to be, which has now been replaced by "lifestyle" acreage blocks. So on the way home I explored the new side streets to see if any part of the circuit survived. This is the only bit, the uphill not-quite straight known as "the Kink" which has a blind left turn on the crest. At the time one of the most challenging corners of any Sydney circuit. You were flat up the hill and had to turn in early, because the car would be airborne on the crest, the idea being that you'd land with enough room to complete the turn. Many big accidents here but felt so good when you got it right. I was fastest V6 in my Dino in 1989. btw the hill is steeper in real life than it appears in photos. Further down the main road is the original circuit entry with a cluster of light industrial units, all looking sad. NIMBY neighbours killed off one of the cradles of Australian motorsport. A great track for group M/O cars partically before they banned the tabs and wings and allowed grooved slicks , the various Brabham's that ran in the early M/O historic years were quick...BT30s,the well put together twin cams models and from memory Doctor death ran his BT 26 their and Bib ran the Tasman BT31 their .
Yes, Dr Death had his big accident at the Kink. Major head injury because he insisted on wearing a cork helmet like Jack's, could very well have caused his bizarre behaviour in later years.
I remember a beautiful brown 365 GTC4 coming to grief there on a Rally; 1985? Silly signature here to annoy KIAI
Marshall liked his Brabham's BT31 2.5 litre Tasman Repco BT23E 2.5 litre Tasman Repco BT26/2 F1 Cosworth
I remember it well, the control tower was opposite & a little bit back from where you took the photo, I always thought the approach & double apex loop after the crest was somewhere if you didn't get right you lost a lot of time, the straight looks narrower now. Nice find, good memories from the '80's, lots of car clubs used this track for super sprints as you would remember,
I think you're referring to an incident at Oran park, last corner coming on to the main straight, concrete wall. Made a mess of a nice car, now in QLD I think.
Spent a lot of weekends there as a kid in the 80s with Dad racing his Coopers and Brabhams..Great times....
He had Jacks BT7A and Bibs BT4 both running 2.5 L FPF climax engines...He also ran the K3 there as well as the Cooper Bristol..
Two well known Brabham's BT4 is now in England . Do you know the story behind that car and Bib and Brabham? BT7A Can't place it.
I’ll dig out some Photos and chassis numbers..Yes Dad sold the BT4 in the UK...The BT7A also went to the UK..The K3 was one of the few cars that he had that managed to stay here..That was sold to Rod in the late 80s up in Brisbane..Not sure if it is still in the family after Rods passing?...
