I have owned a scud and a challenge stradale, both epic, but have you driven a pista or pista spider? Not to take anything away from scud of CS but the pistas are 10 times more engaging and exciting than either a scud or CS imho especially when driven hard.

This topic has been discussed elsewhere, but the SUV is a business opportunity and the board would be incompetent if they didn’t pick up the revenue available there, whatever enthusiasts may think of a Ferrari SUV.

You misunderstood me. I never talked about a radical stripped off track oriented car.

It's simple, a convertible car needs reinforcements that make it heavier and less stiff. It's like going the oppostite way the engineers try to go with the vs.

The reason why there is no GT3/GT3 RS convertible.

Perhaps however it should NOT be branded or called a Ferrari. It should be a sub brand endorsed by Ferrari. The Purosange by Ferrari or something like this. A Ferrari is a 2 door sports car with racing tech. Period.

I can understand why a spider VS seems illogical, but I have found they make surprisingly good sense. Our Speciale is a coupe, wonderful car, but our Pista is a spider. I took it on track and couldn’t really notice in the handling it was a spider. However, on the road, its comparative lack of stiffness is much more noticeable. The 812 GTS is different. Much stiffer than the Pista Spider on the road and a thoroughly well conceived open V12 - it’s wonderful and will make a great donor car for a GTS VS.

As mentioned above, none of these cars are a track-only device (even the Porsche GT products, which in fact do include an open version in the stable; the Spyder). I think they are best thought of as brilliant road cars, further enhanced by using some of the aggression of track-only cars, to produce an extra-aggressive road car that will generate some of the fun of the track cars but in a package that lets you drive to and from the track before and after. In that context a spider can make tremendous sense. Especially in 812 GTS VS form. That car will be brilliant on the road, great on the track and no doubt look fabulous if the standard car is anything to go by. I for one would definitely choose a spider 812 VS even if they produced more of them. The coupe is virtually as imperfect a track car as the spider will be and the spider will have a dimension on the road that the coupe doesn’t. Both will be fabulous, neither will be as good on track as a 488 Challenge but to be an owner of either will be a privilege.

Says who? If Enzo were here today he would sell as many SUVs as he could if it would pay for him to go racing.

This is derailing this thread and we can move this to the appropriate thread however no I don’t believe Enzo would build an SUV. While in some way it can be twisted into fitting into Enzo’s logic of selling anything to pay for racing, in reality he wouldn’t even let a V6 be called a Ferrari. He made a sub branded V6 car made by Ferrari. Even Ferrari doesn’t say they are building an SUV and side step it by calling it an ‘FUV’ and saying that it won’t be known for crawling rocks. Trying to cash in while pretending to hold on to some principal.

Yes back on topic. So if 812 VS coupe and spider were each priced 20% above 812 and 812 gts and they kept making them until they ran out of orders. How many do you think they could sell?

Probably 7,500 coupes and 5,000 convertibles.
Especially as the last V12 of it's type.

Ferrari had three buyers for every LaFerrari car they planned to build. Imagine the 'last Ferrari' in effect getting an even bigger boost than a 'continuation'.

Many people bought the 812 on the basis that it was the last V12 - Ferrari just ramped production to meet demand and the resale tanked. Ferrari has become so astute at managing demand & supply without leaving too much on the table. If this really were the last front engine unassisted V12 then why not price it well over $1mil considering what they were able to do with the Monza?

I believe the V12 will continue for a long time - smaller and probably with some mild electric assistance - different and maybe better. The N/A V8 sounds fantastic but the TTV8 is much more drivable. So different but better.

It is not that simple, you are missing my point. With the 812 VS we are not talking about a car like a GT3RS. Heck, even the Pista is not as track focused.

You are talking about all these VS cars as track focused cars on the same level as a GTXRS, but fact is that they aren't. Ferrari have not made a VS car that is as track focused as a GTXRS since the 360 CS.

It is a misconception to equate VS with track day special. The VS is a car that is honed for a more unique and engaging driving experience. Does that mean it performs better on track? Yes, usually it does, but it does not mean it has to compare with other manufactures track cars or special cars. Making a car track focused does not always make it better overall.

Looking at what Ferrari has in its portfolio, I see no reason to buy an 812 VS as a track car. I want it as a great road car, just like my SF90 which I think is that in its non-AF guise.

If you have not driven them, you don't know what it is you are asking for and are comparing. When you are talking about what the engineers do, consider this. Unless you are a good driver, you will have a hard time getting any more from a Pista Spider than you will a Pista. You need to keep in mind that these cars are now getting so good, that it gets harder and harder to distinguish. I did not really exchange my Pista Spider for a Pista because I wanted to save 50-60 kg or so, I did it because I could not get harnesses in it. I wanted that for what I'm doing with that car - and I am creating what I think is a GT2RS equivalent car, which takes some modifications and upgrades. Now as for the 812 as that is the car on "trial" here. I could not feel any difference in rigidity between that and the SF. If you look at the weight, there's not a lot of difference there either. You are not reverse-engineering a car because you make a drop top, you are making a car that has something else to offer, and that presents challenges.

If I should look at what I'd like to see Ferrari do, it would be to focus their Mid engined VS cars more on track, like a Senna or STO. I am well aware that the 812 is a sportscar, not a GT, and that it does not sit in the GT line of cars, but it is a road car for most. I think it is best suited to be the best and most honed b-road eater of its time. The 812 is a happy car and a playful car, and Ferrari should build on that. Use the mid engined cars to create something serious, but keep the supercar a bit mad and flamboyant. If you take the character the 812 already has out of it, you lose what makes the 812 the 812.

If Ferrari do as good a job on the 812 VS as they did on the F12 TdF, we are looking at something very special, track focused or not.
I don't see the TdF as a track car, but rather a take on the F12 that makes it as good as it can be for the road. That's what I want in the 812 VS. Build the best 812 you can while keeping its basic traits, because those are what made me fall for it in the first place. For me the 812 is a car that urges you to keep driving and keep pushing, and for me the 812 VS needs to keep that in its DNA.
