We do not have the automatic right to self defence, instead a jury decides if you made a "reasonable response".

The state prosecutor would say that the thugs breaking the door down and entering your home were only there to rob, not shoot you, therefore you can't shoot them.

 

Not a jury in the world would convict - it would never come to trial anyway. What you do have to ensure is that you kill the bastards, because the bar for civil suits is set much higher, and if you injure one of those dickheads, it's likely he'll sue you.
