Very sad news today of the sudden passing of Ian Johnson, known to many of us as Sam.

Sam was one of the cleverest, most innovative men, especially working with fibreglass, the material with which he became synonymous. He was the ‘J’ in JWF, producers of body shells to convert prosaic chassis into exotic sports cars. They went on to produce increasingly sophisticated products, culminating in complete racing cars.

Sam owned a very early 206 Dino, the factory prototype RHD car. He built from scratch an F2 Dino replica, he's sitting in it in the photo, taken at Wakefield some years ago. Then he did a 206SP, which today runs in regularity at historic race meetings.

Sorry to hear about your mate Ian, he definitely sounds like he was a legend.

Ray and David R had the F2 Dino replica for a while ,not sure who owns it now ..

Very gifted as you said with fiberglass...To most of us the body shell on that F2 Dino was aluminium

Yes. That car got Guido started in historics, running in regularity.

btw Sam measured that body off a real 206SP (owned by Robs Lamplough) in the UK, using a tape measure and various lengths of straight edge. He returned to Australia, and made a plywood buck, from which the molds were taken. Also could have been used to make an ally body. This is proper coachbuilding, not simply flopping a mold off a car.

 

There was one on carsales last year for about $150K. I wonder if it was the same car? I think it was talked about on here, but I can't remember what the outcome was. In fact, I can't remember much of anything these days...

Yes I’m going to be at Bathurst. I haven’t felt great since my initial procedure for Prostate Cancer, but it’s very random so I’m going to give the racing a crack, mainly because it’s Bathurst.
If I can’t do it I have a Plan B, but I’m hoping not to have to use it.
Once again I want to thank the thousands and thousands of folk who sent me well wishes and advice. It is truly touching and greatly appreciated.
It also shows the far reach our sport has. Sometimes we are inclined to forget that fact!
My ongoing targeted radiation treatment starts on March 2 back at the Peter Mac Cancer Clinic. Those people through every phase of this journey have been Solid Gold. Amazing dedicated people!
If you are going to Bathurst, come say hi, and if not watch the TCM races on TV. Our cars haven’t been to the mountain since October 2019, so we are all excited!

If you ever find yourself needing help with a Cosworth engine, remember Geoff Richardson Engines in the UK. My US supplier of oil filters appears to have shut down due to CCP flu, so Ive been searching for an alternative. Geoff uses an Alfa V6 filter with a beautifully machined spacer. Delivered in a few days and easy to source filters in future.
