    Great video, I really didn't know that history of the car, didn't realise it had direct fuel injection & that it really was a race car for the road, they're absolutely beautiful, no wonder there worth so much money, thanks for posting :)

    "They took the front and rear axle, and the engine, put them on the floor and said what can we build around this". How do people dream up this stuff?

    The 300SL is a road version of the W194 race car, built specifically for the US market as a luxury tourer. It was a marketing exercise, borrowing from the success of the race cars. Like every Merc SL ever made, lovely to drive at modest to brisk speeds, but not sports cars.

    And for the non German speakers, SL = Sonder Laufen = Special Runner or Special Roadster. Not "Sports Light".
