Hope the Paganis and Bugattis are on order before they wind up in therapy.

The kids parking lot at his School looked nothing like my High School days.

Threw the keys to my M5 to my 16 yo daughter many moons ago. She came back complaining about the heavy clutch, but she managed the car just fine.
Had the pleasure of watching her swing a huey on Collins Avenue/Miami in a Lambo spider (with her daughter riding shotgun) a few months ago.
Couldn't see, but heard her NAIL it and disappear.
    Gotta raise em right.

Yes! The Camaro IROCs were a very big deal in the parking lot in my day. I was more interested in the VW GTI, though.

I don't have a link at the moment but there was one young Chinese kid that smashed up his Ferrari in Vancouver and bought a McLaren the same afternoon to replace it. The news interviewed him when he was pulling out of the McLaren dealership. Most people wait until their insurance claim gets sorted out.

I'll bet that the Camaro IROC crowd upgraded to Corvettes and your GTI eventually led to a Ferrari-kinda logical I'd say.

I worked at a gas station in 1985 or 1986 when they first came out. A guy used to come in with an IROC blue one. I remember always running out all excited to fill it up. Over 35 years later I used the same guy to sell my house. I told him that I remembered him from way back when.

So the possible means for which a young person can drive an expensive car are

    Through others
    1. Rich parents
    2. Rich (older) significant other (cougar or sugar daddy if you will)
    3. Rich (younger) SO (see other reasons below)

they can themselves get these vehicles
    4. Super talent - law/med school with blessed careers.
    5. WallStreetBet winners (GME anyone?)
    6. Early crypto buyers.
    7. Start a business that had been wildly successful
    8. Exotic car rental - if you really want to, you can save $1K for that exotic car dream
    9. Super star coder (I live in Silicon Valley). there are plenty of FAANG folks with spare cash
    10. they actually are older but look younger (blessed genes / blessed plastic surgeons)

So.. you can't really assume anything when you see a young person driving an expensive car

I personally know people in each category (expect #3 and #5) you describe.

so folks that assume this and that, crack me up.

I've been instructing on-track for close to two decades and I started instructing for the FCA about 10 years ago. In that time I have met some amazing people, many of whom have very nice late-model F cars and are willing to enjoy them at the track. The common thread of the young professionals seems to be 'grit'. Many are leaders in their field, from medical equipment design to software development. Many are self-made and didn't come from a line of family ownership. It is impressive and inspiring to meet these younger people and to share some knowledge with them.

One of the many reasons I love the Ferrari community is the diversity of the owners (and of course the cars). The younger gen of owners seem more likely to enjoy the car on track (you can purchase track day policies for protection against incident). It took me a long time to get into one of these cars, most impressive when someone young can pull it off!

My view is a little different than most: I play a comparison game. In 1983, I was one that was given a new '83 308 QV when I was 16. It was my everyday car. I drove it to school, parties, dates... Looking back, I was a very responsible and DOWN TO EARTH kid. Never was a drinker or did drugs. Took care of my car like it was my baby. I respected people and UNDERSTOOD what it was like to have people look and comment at a young kid driving a Ferrari. It helped built my character and made me turn weaknesses into future strengths. I took A LOT of crap and learned how to deal with it!!!

So that being said, I TOTALLY GET IT and judge each individual on there own behavior.

That being said. I'd love to know the whereabouts of VIN #47123. Sold in 1985.

I bought my Aventador SV a few months ago for my 21st birthday. I can definitely say I wasn't expecting the reactions in public that I've encountered thus far. 95% ask for a rev, pic with the car, etc. but the other 5% or so tend to make pointless comments about "daddy's money" or "daddy's car". I find it a little odd but I guess that's what comes with owning one, definitely didn't expect a straight piped SV to be "under the radar".

I started in the automotive industry when I was 16, fortunate enough to have moved into an executive level position at 21.

I'd love to hear a little bit more about how you could afford that car at your age? Your received no money from your parents?

Nope, although my family lives comfortably (father is law enforcement and my mother is a graphic designer) I worked for what I have. I started as an automotive photographer at 16, product specialist at 17, salesperson at 18. Contrary to what most believe automotive salespeople can make a very respectable living (+20k / month) if they do well at the right store with a solid pay-plan. I was still living at home and saving every penny of what I made and reinvesting in flipping cars (I had my own dealer license) and multifamily investments. In 2019 I was one of the highest volume Jaguar Land Rover sales consultants in the nation. I was then promoted to Used Car Manager at 19, GSM at 20, and an executive level position at 21.

I worked myself to death and skipped out on enjoying my teenage years in hopes to set myself up for the later years in my life. Currently tracking my goal of purchasing my first dealership by the age of 24. Fortunately I had many mentors to guide me through the process from my earlier teenage years as an exotic automotive photographer.

Damn, I so vividly remember that...and the ‘82 black trans am with gold trim....those kids were “on top of the world.” I borrowed my parent’s Datsun 810 wagon to go out on a date...wasn’t quite the same. Though...the back seat action was epic. :D

In high cost of living areas like the SF Bay, a lot of times it ends up being a matter of priorities combined with high housing prices, for younger professionals.

I have a friend group of car enthusiasts that I go driving with, all between the ages of 27 and 33. There's a Huracan, a 991.2 GT3, F13 M6, F82 M3 and myself with a 458, among other cars, and only the guy with the GT3 owns his own home. The rest of us all rent. When a 3br 2ba house regularly goes for $1.5-2mm, a downpayment is about equal to buying any of these cars outright
