Bob- You must like Schneider Trophy aircraft. These made huge strides in engine technology that would be used in WW-II. The UK won three in a row and retired the Trophy per the rules.

I do. They are art and science at a time of great experimentation and leaps in performance. They were also extremely dangerous.

When I was a kid and living in Washington, D.C. I used to spend some of my Saturdays at the Smithsonian. My favorite place, of course, was the "airplane museum". A Quansit type of ratty little building on the back lot that contained WW1 examples and some post war airplanes, one of which was this Curtiss racer. Little or no fencing was provided so public access was close enough for many to write and carve their names on the artifacts like this Curtiss. The horizontal stabilizer was loose from being wiggled and worked over by visitors. The SPAD, "Mayer" was there in its original fabric complete with six German bullet holes in the aft fuselage, with the patches decorated with an Iron Cross. There was a bullet hole in the metal at the base of the vertical fin, also. There was an original Fokker D-7, Nieuport 17, and the hull of the NC -4 along with many other interesting pieces of history that were being terribly mistreated at that time. The entrance had a WW1 Whippet tank outside.

The Supermarine S.4, which had a unique W-12 engine. They did better when they switched to V-12s.

And later, he won a Thompson Trophy race in the infamous Gee Bee.

Affirmative, Jimmy was one of the few who could master Gee Bee.

Gee Bee Racer Crash 1931 - Stock Footage - Bing video

Jimmy used what we now call a low yo-yo maneuver in his racing, gradually climbing towards the next pylon without affecting speed much, and then diving around the pylon to pick up some free airspeed and make up for the G loss in the turn.

Too bad she was scrapped. She should have been put on display back at the track.

Race mechanics have been known to skimp on fuel loads too !
