    I am crawling under the car with the battery attached and I noticed that the alternator has a high pitch low volume hissing sound, like an electronic resonating frequency. What the hell is making this thing hissing like a snake? I am aware that some tantalum capacitors hiss when they fail, but an alternator has no caps.

    Perhaps the Voltage Regulator. Simply disconnect the plug from it and see if the hissing stops.
