I bought a Swaters blue with crema 6 speed 456 in the UK this week. I’ve had a few more shouty Ferrari’s in the past but this is the first one that my wife actually likes!

When I start the car it starts straight away but then needs a tiny bit of throttle to stop it stalling immediately. Once I’ve done that the car idles just fine. My manual tells me not to touch the accelerator pedal on starting. It got 66,000 miles but it’s been hardly used over the last few years. Any thoughts about where to look? I’ve drive 100 miles and it’s still happening.

Also, I’d like to buy one of those shift gate locks but I can’t see one for a 456/550. Does anyone know if one exists?

    Many thanks

Two things to check would be MAF sensors and dirty/dripping fuel injectors. I had my injectors cleaned and resealed and 3 of them were dripping, leading to a very low rpm start that some throttle helped. Sounds like yours could be a worse case of too much fuel at start. Techron fuel injection cleaner helped before the injectors were fixed, but did not cure the problem.

Very classy car. I hope the issue is resolved with the help of the pros here and enjoy your motoring with the all important wife approval.

How much time do you need to keep accelerating at startup? Is it just a quick blip, or do you need to hold it for a few seconds/minutes?

Another option to check is if the throttle cable in the engine bay is somehow getting stuck on startup or needs adjustment. Perhaps it's not pulling the throttle body open enough until you accelerate more to sort of dislodge it.

I would lastly try to check the idle control valve or have it cleaned, but I doubt it's that if your idle is fine after a few minutes.

Thanks for the replies. I will try a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel tank over the next few days. The car only needs very brief touch on the throttle to get it to idle, maybe 0.5 seconds.

Be aware of the dissolving rubber around the fuel pumps. It deteriorates and makes its way through the fuel system and can cause rough running upon initial starting. Ask me how I know haha.

So, try opening the gas cap. Maybe a vapor lock. If that doesn’t help, ECU’s and throttle boxes.
