Carlos Reutemann in intensive care, condition said to be worsening

Former Formula 1 racer Carlos Reutemann has been admitted to the intensive care section of an Argentinian hospital after suffering from digestive bleeding, with his condition said to be worsening.

He turned 79 on April 12th.

Very sad news, I hope that Carlos makes a complete recovery. I saw him score two of his GP victories, on his day he was unbeatable.

 

Sad. I loved him at Williams and in his stubborn fight with Jones. Met him in the pits in Hockenheim.

That is encouraging news. I signed Carlos (“Lole” to Argentinians) to a personal services contract when he was driving for Lotus and spent some time with him in Buenos Aires. He was very down to earth, even soft spoken, and a genuine all around nice guy. It was absolutely impossible for Carlos to show his face in public without being mobbed by adoring fans. It seemed to me that he disliked all that attention and thus preferred to be at his beach home in Mar del Plata. Carlos was then and still is beloved by all Argentinians. Hopefully he will get through this.

Heart felt sentiment for a man who is fighting for his life. BTW he did not drive for Ferrari until 1976.

Reutemann transferred out of ICU as condition improves

Former F1 driver Carlos Reutemann has reportedly left the intensive care unit at Rosario's Sanatorio Parque clinic after the Argentinian Senator's physical condition improved following a case of digestive hemorrhage.

Reutemann was recently admitted to a hospital in Sante Fe after suffering from anemia and internal bleeding. But the 79-year-old's condition required his transfer to Rosario where he underwent an endoscopic procedure and remained in the ICU.

The twelve-time Grand Prix winner was said to be in stable condition after last Tuesday's intervention. On Sunday, it was reported that Reutemann's sustained improving health allowed for his transfer out of IC and into a private room at Rosario's Sanatorio Parque.

"This morning the national senator and former governor Carlos Reutemann, who has been hospitalized in Rosario since Saturday, May 8, after being in intensive care for several days, he was transferred to the general ward," reported Argentine newspaper La Capital.

Reutemann was accompanied during his ordeal by daughters Cora and Mariana , and his wife Veronica.

On Twitter on Sunday, Mariana Reutemann posted a picture of her father sitting upright in his hospital bed reading the local paper.

Reutemann took part in 146 Grands Prix from 1972 to 1982, winning races with Brabham, Ferrari and Williams, and missed out on the 1981 F1 world championship by a single point against Nelson Piquet.

After retiring from motorsport, Reutemann embarked on a political career in his home country, becoming the governor of his native province of Santa Fe. He has served in Argentina's senate since 2003.

i haven't used that praktica in decades. hell, you can't even buy 35mm film most places.

 

Walgreens and CVS carry them.

Getting them processed is a bit more cumbersome, but doable.

I know because I bought a camera from WWII, which I use at reenactment events. It's a PITA to operate but it does work. Would make look your Praktica like something from the space age.

 

Same here: buying the film is not the problem; having them processed is another matter; unless you do it yourself, of course; easy for black and white, a bit more complicated and time consuming for color
(Nothing equates a good black and white picture, IMHO).

Well you hit on a good point there: I was thinking about processing BW film myself but didn't really want to deal with the chemicals (I used to do that as a teenager, so I'm familiar with it). So I decided to have that "outsourced" and there are some online companies who do a nice job. You could even take the film back to Walgreens but they too just send it in to one of the online services. The one I got actually scans the images AND sends me back the negatives. I photoshop the scans and turn them back into BW pictures because that's more appropriate for my WW2 shots. So I have come full circle.

What has that got to do with Lole? Nothing, but I'm glad he is no longer the topic anymore because he is now improving.

 

Great to hear that Carlos is on the road to recovery. Since Monaco is next up, a fitting remembrance for me is this pic I took in the 1980 Monaco race of Carlos in the Williams coming into Casino Square (Hotel de Paris in the background) with Jacques Lafitte (look closely) in the Ligier sneaking up behind. Carlos won and Jacques finished second.

Yep; Spain 1975 was certainly not a happy memory, there was a bad omen on that race almost from the start; and it was also the end of a great track, Montjuich. Too bad it couldn't go on.

Yes, I'm happy he is improving also. It is a pity he has remained rather reclusive the last 20 years or so as far as Formula One is considered (he was quite active in politics), you rarely see him interviewed, but he must have a lot of interesting memories to share. I was thinking about him recently, reading people who were speaking about confrontation/comparison with your team mates: Carlos has had Niki Lauda, Gilles Villeneuve, Mario Andretti and Alan Jones as team mates in a five seasons bracket; how about that, not really "the easy way"?

Yes and he played mostly second fiddle to them. He stood up against Jones and they had a fallout with the net effect that he lost out again.

Never won a WDC but still had a very good run in F1 winning races and podiums, nothing to sneeze at. And drove for great teams. Quite a career.

 

Not sure I would agree to your first sentence: he beat Andretti fair and square in 1979, and he had four wins to his tally in 1978 against one for Villeneuve...
Pierre Dupasquier from Michelin held him in a very high esteem; he said that without him and his driver's expertise, especially in tests, Michelin would never have succeded in Formula One. Gordon Murray also said that he was one of his favorite.

But the bare (and sad) truth is that he is the member of a fast dwindling club...from that generation, there aren't so many still around. We lost Niki a year ago, and that was sad.
As said above, too bad he doesn't share more of his memories; in the last ten years, I've seen him speak about his F1 years in a couple of videos in Spanish, and that's all...
On the whole, the seventies were great as far as racing was concerned (agreed, there were perhaps one or two boring seasons, but we have had many more during the 2010's...)
