348 Help! This gear oil doesn't look right

I bought this car late last year and haven't driven it much yet. It has a couple of slow drips so I checked the gear oil level. The clutch was supposedly replaced very recently so I wasn't intending on replacing the gear oil, just checking it. The level and color don't look right to me.

The only hazy milky yellow i've seen like that is superlight shockproof by redline. I think it fell out of fashion years ago. it takes a couple changes to flush it.

Yeah that's shockproof is not rated for gearbox with an internal pump like ours but people kept using it. Try draining it and replacing it with some gearbox oil. Spirax if you can find it, don't use the Amsoil.

There are several different Amsoil oils on offer. I know to stay away from the Severe Gear stuff but there is also this:

Yes the sever gear, should have qualified it. Give that a shot! Let us know!

 

I remember someone posted on here they used the Severe Gear oil and it was terrible.

 

Ok I must be mistaken. I did a search and people seem to like it a lot. I must have been smoking crack.

 

I used sever gear and it made the gears severe alright! Horrid. That other stuff you posted I never tried, it may be great.

 

I am going Redline 75W90NS. It should have the best grab for the synchros. It is what the guys at Redline suggested.

Yes and I trust them. And I have heard this from other 348 owners as well.

 

Other posts suggest otherwise with modifier needs, quite a few out there, apparently when you get it correct it works well. Pretty sure that 75W90NS is yellow as well?

Does the 348 have any potential failures that lead to water mixing with oil? Creamy brown oil is usually a sign of water in the oil/ gear oil.

 

right, but it's not milky. It's what I've got and it's only not so great when dead cold...but it's not the completely resistant feeling I had with the shockproof. and it took a whole flush of NS to clear the shockproof. This year's change is much better than last years.

Like stated above, "here we go again". My experience was when I purchased my 348 in 2013 the gear change was great after warm up. I did a my first major shortly after purchase and the suggested oil here on the forum was the Shockproof so that is what I told the shop to use. Could hardly shift so dumped that within weeks and went with NS and it improved but was still not what I wanted. Ran that for a year and went to MTL which the Mr Rifle said he uses in 348 which specs a GL4 oil. Almost back to what I had when I bought the car and several months ago I purchased a 5L jug of Spirax and haven't got it installed yet but have high hopes.

 

Yes, it is clear yellow. I only know what the guy at Redline told me and advice I got from previous 348 owners who seem to really know what they are talking about.

All gear oils lubricate. Friction modifiers only make them more slippery. That is not what you want with a higher mileage transmission. MTL might work fine for a lower mileage 348. Mileage is another factor that needs to be considered.

 

Is 17,000 miles low enough? I switched to Redline 75w90NS and noticed a significant improvement.

Everybody does their own thing and that's fine. Myself, after realizing there is no secret oil everybody's keeping from you I tried something unconventional. I tried exactly what the manufacturer recommended. I found it. I installed it. Works great. Imagine that.

The 348 does not have an oil pump in the gearbox, only the 355 has one to pump oil into the heat exchanger. If your 348 is happy with shockproof, it's OK to continue using it. I prefer MTL myself.

 

I should know this but what type of limited slip differential do we have?

 

From MTL? For you I would think a little more friction modifier would be a good thing.
