Yeah I spent all my apprentice wages on my LJ and got it as sorted as one could get, hydraulic clutch, toyota 5 speed, Dellortos etc. Gerry Cooper up here did a lot of work on the head and was great while it lasted but it was so ported he went too close to the water galleries and it failed eventually. I lost interest and flogged it. Still handled terribly, you'd turn the wheel and wait for it to decide whether to make the corner
Wow that was a good deal! My 260 2 seater cost me $3500 off my brother back in 94ish. It had a hot 2.8 in it and was a pretty clean car though. I put the Dellortos off the LJ on it and it was sweet!!
Another wire wheeled manual 3.8 Mark 2 has popped up for sale , with Coombes style rear lip guards , standard brakes and no Supra 5 speed but a overdrive switch on the gearstick knob....so a latter gearbox perhaps out of XJ6. Always wanted one , but would i drive it over my E-type on the drives I do ...perhaps not. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
There are 8 or 9 wire wheeled manuals here, most of 'em having either 5 speed or MOD: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/jaguar/mark-ii/?offset=0
Most have been modified or are 3.4s .Or are sub-standard .. The black car for auction has all the bells and whistles , apart from the trim colour and I suspect its a full leather interior ?
No, i've been around the model long enough to pick or read of a quality one re mods and its condition , I was lucky enough to be bought up around these cars when they were new , including a carmen red with cinnamon trim wire wheel 3.8 manual when new (a Melbourne motorshow car stand car) that my father bought new in 1961 that he was going to race was modified by Harry Firth , then my sister (you know the one house in Brighton /tower) was born and my father placed his racing on hold for good.
It still doesn't give you or anyone else the right to bag other stuff on the market prior to any sort of inspection....that'd be nuts.
Apart from saying "substandard " where have I bagged an individual Mark 2 manual with wire wheels? + substandard to requirements I would have if buying one . I follow the Mark 2 adds closely , its rare a quality non-modified mechanically 3.8 manual on wire wheels comes up. Lorbek had one a while ago and I missed it , its now overseas ,It was a ripper 9 to 1 pistons , factory modified period heads/cams and a close ratio gearbox ...unheard of in a 3.8.. I lost the bidding war on a Roy Savage Mark 2 and the only other one in recent times was an Ian Cummins estate car that went for huge money. You pretty much covered the fact that all the one's on C/S are no good,it was a sweeping statement. ...a bit like saying Brooklands attracts substandard cars more than other dealers Just about every manual Mk2 has been modified to some extent FROM THE WAY IT LEFT THE FACTORY,you've listed 2 of 'em FFS. None of 'em came out of the factory with louvred bonnets let alone all the other stuff.
