Unfortunately it's been a long time (if ever) since most politicians were really in it to benefit the people.

 

I stupidly use to think they got into politics to improve Australia , both sides, but for the last 20 years the standard has dropped dramatically .... world-wide

You'd think that the US could find better candidates than what they've been coming up with ... and look at the alternative to ScoMo, not good enough

 

Which is ironic considering they don't actually get paid that much.

However, if you equate pay-check to intelligence or skills, they are way overpaid.

Especially - and this is where I'll upset some - on the left of politics.
The truth is most of them are career student / union / staffer hacks whom couldn't get a job operating Gary's pizza oven or Greg's spa in the real world.
They are basically unemployable, so the idea of $200k and some "fame" is too much to resist.

I think they should be paid less. $200k + all their expenses + 15% super + the fact they don't have to do a thing (staffers) and when they **** up they have no accountability = a very very cushy existence. That to most average people is a hell of a lot of money. If you dropped the wage to $150k and reign in the expense accounts it would attract more people with lived life experience that are in it to improve the country not just to put their snout in the trough. The people in Canberra now could earn lots more in the private sector but they have it so good why would they....
