Have had this car in the family for 11 or 12 years now and have noticed what seems to be some type of corrosion underneath the paint in two places on this 612. I did not until recently see this car often so cannot tell you how long they've been there or whether they're growing. I'll certainly be on the lookout moving forward.

Car has less than 9k miles, and has been stored in an AC garage. Both areas are on the driver's side. One under the shield and the other directly above the door handle (right below the rubber weather stripping below the window).

The areas are not soft to the touch, that is, not hollow bubbles but instead are completely hard. They're solid.

They're both also under areas where I could imagine water intrusion playing a role. Neither are in the middle of a panel, etc.

Any idea what is/has caused this? I'm imagining a complicated repair process and likely won't want to have it done.

Definitely rust ... you see this sort of bubbling a lot on Porsche 993s around the windshield seals, dirt and moisture collect under the seal and eventually it starts bubbling. Might have gotten under the shield and same thing around the other seal. Really need to strip, address the rust and repaint the panel, unfortunately. But I would do it now, it's not going to get any better ...

Thanks for the information. Given the body was aluminum I wasn’t anticipating rust but instead, some type of dissimilar metal corrosion etc.

Is car has lived in a garage and other than being washed, exposed to very little moisture.
Is this common on the 612s?

My 612 had a spot on the door similar (but smaller) to the one you have, and it appeared when the car was about 3 months old. Ferrari fixed it under warranty. Had nothing to do with water-- it was some sort of reaction.

I wouldn’t say this is particularly common, but it’s not uncommon either. What you’re seeing is most likely exfoliation corrosion- this is the inter granular corrosion that’s occurring along the top face of aluminium that’s been formed into the sheet metal. Grain boundaries are always more susceptible to corrosion attack, as the inter granular boundary has a different electronegative potential, so you effectively set up your galvanic cell between the metal grains. In materials like body panels that are effectively sheet metal formed through cold rolling/stamping, the grain boundary tends to follow the surface profile. This results in the material flaking off in layers as the corrosion product expands and wedges along the grain boundary.

It’s just one of these things. Catch it early (before the structure is compromised) and it’s an easy fix for a good body shop.

I agree with brogenville and your comment about dissimilar metal corrosion.

It's a known issue in the 612 and while you are not the first it's rare. I have only seen it on the doors where the window trim is slip fit and held by friction up until now but this doesn't surprise me. Anywhere that something is press fit the primer can get a nick or scratch. I would imagine a small nick or scratch occurred when the emblem was installed.

Thanks everyone for the information. Assuming dissimilar metal corrosion, I'm wondering if it will continue to get worse or if it's leveled off.

Any thoughts on whether the section vs entire panel could be painted?

I don’t think you read my comment. It will get worse.

There's a degree of luck to it- you need a break in the passivated layer to initiate the process. This could be as small as a stone chip, or as alluded to above by msark, it could be a nick in the paint and a tiny scratch on the metal caused when the shield or your door seal was installed. A chloride rich environment will speed the process up too of course.

    Thanks everyone for the input.

Anyone aware of an excellent body shop in SWFL (between Tampa and Naples)?

I'd contact Naples Motorsports and find out who does their paint and body work, or whom they recommend.

"and the other directly above the door handle (right below the rubber weather stripping below the window)"

I´ve my car since 2013 and mine had the same problem on the right door - a friend of mine only painted the small horizontal area - looks perfect!
In my opinion the reason is that the guys in Maranello put the body in white parts outside before they come into the production line, the weather conditions (rain,..) do the rest ...

Nothing noticable. No change in the 4+ years I have had the car. It's a small spot. I'm tempted to sand it off and fix It with a rattle can of paint.
