Thinking about picking up a 348 and have been talking with this dealer. Unfortunately they have no service records available and I'm not sure if I'm willing to go in without knowing if a belt service has been done. Opinions, or thoughts? Thanks!

At this point I would be buying the car as if the major is due. Consider those cost in the purchase price and if your comfortable, Pull that trigger!

Wow mine must be worth 100K then.
As far as service, put it on when you get it as Kokose7en is correct. I have seen many cars get serviced but all they do is the belt so they can say they did it. That is usually inadequate, leaky bearing seals on timing cover etc get lest, no replacing tensioners etc. Unless its actually a full service I'd redo it anyhow. I did with mine.
Personally only thing to worry about is compression or leak down, and these cars rarely have issues in that dept unless neglected or abused while being neglected. Everything else is pretty easy to fix.

Dead sure the steering rack is shot, they all are, no one maintains that they just accept wonky handling as "what do you expect with an old Ferrari" rationalization. Jack up the passenger side, grab the passenger front wheel and move back and forth as if its turning. If it has play and you hear clunk have them take 1K off as a HBUGE issue then fix it for a few hundred as a DIY. :)

At least they are only complaining about the fake prices and not the cars lol.

    My .02.

google searching on the VIN turned up NOTHING... not even old listings.

For something completely unknown, that's a pretty steep ask, especially in red/tan. If you're going to DIY it, day 1 will be pull the engine out, IMO.

If I were buying another one, I'd check the following (unless the price began with 3....then take my money):

    1. compression and leakdown.
    2. trans bearings
    3. clutch life
    4. rack bushing

all four of those will impair the pleasure of owning a 348. Everything else is a minor inconvenience.

If you're not going to DIY, definitely get a PPI done by an independent of your choice. Any push back on getting a PPi done, walk.

I'll tell you this, when these cars are running right and issues are resolved, they are so much fun. Good luck, plenty of help out here to get it where it needs to be.

That's a pretty rough car considering their asking price. Wow.

Wow the price was dropped 10k ????? I would question that right off the bat probably needs a major service which is not a bad thing and if so the price is right where it should be for the market now (early 2021)

If you are welling to do the service and the car has not been in any accidents and a PPI comes back good then go for it

If your looking for a turn key car you we’ll be spending a lot more money around 70-90k which if you figure it out that a asking price of 60k and a major service around 20k puts the car right where it should for this market

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Ferrari

20K major where you getting that? Major belt service pulleys at Indy shops is anywhere between 4500 to 6500 typically

If you've got a receipt showing that I'd love to see it post it please.

Yeah, out here in SoCal, a major is closer to like 7. Mine also needed a clutch and some electrical work, which added another 7. Given i paid 50 for mine in April 2021 knowing that such service was needed, it was fine. Actually, at the time, 50 for one that needed work was pretty rich and a gamble. But having not been in the Ferrari club prior with no good relationships for good deal leads and the supply seemingly dwindling, i was comfortable rolling the dice. It was the car i always wanted in the specs i desired most (red and tan, ts, black rockers still in place).

I would echo that realistically you should expect to pay anywhere from 70-80 for a true turn key model. But even that, you never know what little things may have been overlooked that could balloon. Just having the major done is fine, but if the car isn’t properly CONSISTENTLY maintained, you could still be looking at a big shock bill. I was ok with doing mine with a ppi to get a fair idea of what i was getting into, taking it straight to the real mechanics (fast cars in Redondo beach) and waiting a little over a month to have them make the big fixes and uncover any other weirdness. It is at a place now where i am comfortable doing the rest of the maintenance and work myself for general issues. Which is good Bc im moving from SoCal back to the bay this weekend.

A friend did a drive-by and looked at the TS. He said it's super clean and well taken care of cosmetically, both on the surface and underneath. I can get a full engine drop service here at a local shop for 7k so I'm considering making the buy. The Spider I was looking at was very clean on the outside but I saw some neglect under the hood which made me a little nervous. I am tempted!

PM me. Considering selling my 95 Spider. Its last major was 2017, and the best indy Ferrari tech in the Southeast is doing a major service as you read this.
