Well , for once, I was correct in most of my assessment. I guessed that it was the Philippines but it was Hawaii. 15th Pursuit Grp. P-40's was based there in 1940. I don't envy you. Nobody gives a damn about what bravery took place at certain locations. Some of the battlefields where my grandfather fought in the Civil War are gone, turned in to shopping malls.
Yeah, we've got the shopping mall developer crowd. These guys will take an important artifact, and throw it in a dumpster. Although I rather like what the Brits did with Silverstone. How's that for a midway attraction ! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Missing. Perhaps that's some sort of display replica ? We've got a full size P40 Model in our museum. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry for the poor picture but the detail of this model was over the top. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My aunt was a WASP, she recently turned 100 years old. A war time photo of her with a B-26. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That lady had guts and skill. God bless her. That airplane was a bad dude and took its measure of many male pilots..
Bob- Funny thing is that the Marauder had the best combat loss ratio of its contemporaries, even if she was a bit touchy to fly.
Yes, my late brother in law flew them in the south pacific and he also flew B-25's. He said that if they were going into heavy action, he preferred the B-26 because it was tough and could take a lot of punishment. He liked the B-25 because it was so comfortable and easy to fly.
When most of the Marauders in Europe were scrapped, many of the engines lived on in other applications. Most notably, entire B-26 "power eggs" (prop, engine & cowling) found their way onto a moderately successful French airliner called the Bretagne. (Later examples, though, had different cowlings and three-bladed props.) Image Unavailable, Please Login
On my visit about fifteen years ago, I could not exit. With this exact view, I stood peering until the doors closed and I was asked to leave.
Absolutely the most exciting airplane that I have ever seen in flight. I saw a buzz job and ramp operation to catch the steaming fuel draining from it after it landed. Magnificent engineering!
