Hi everyone, I'm a super spoilt 52 year old kid because my dad has just left me his beloved 1973 Dino GTS, which he had from new. I'm not as successful as he was and I've just had my first intro into just how expensive it will be to keep. I have a friendly mechanic who said he won't help me without guidance from those that know Dinos best. This seems to be you lot so, if I'm right, may I present my first issue?

    Thanks, Angus (UK)

Buying the car is the most expensive part. General ownership and maintenance is not high as these cars are fairly simple and robust. That said if you have no interest in the car a one owner Dino can be worth an incredible amount should you choose to list it for sale. It really comes down to what you want to do. Congratulations on the inheritance in cash or car form you are now a wealthy man.

There is tons of knowledgeable people here and if you post your questions you can be sure of receiving good advice and information.

You are indeed a spoiled and lucky kid. Congratulation with the wonderful car and welcome to the chat site. You are in good hands here and it seems like you have coupled up with a smart mechanic. From the pictures it looks like the car is in fair shape and could be driven and enjoyed as is. Show us some more detailed pictures when you know more about the car and start your series of questions. You have full access to the most knowledgeable Dino petrol heads in the world I would say.

    Best regards, Peter

Thank you Rob and Peter, I'm glad and grateful be be in good hands. I've sat in the car since I was 4 years old and he asked me to drive it occasionally 'just to keep it running' for him and now I think I know why, it was keeping it running for me, so I'm going to hang onto her (Dinos are 'her' I think?) for as long as possible. Here are some more pics that were done for the insurance 9 years ago as requested. She now has 22,122 miles on her and hasn't been restored except one wing which was resprayed to stop some rust. Basic services every so often. Oil changes etc but not much more. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

So my first tech question is the ignition system seemed to give up when I drove it home. This is a pic of the system and it had a 3 way switch on it. Electronic - OFF - Conventional. And when I switched it to Conventional it started ok and I got it home. It looks pretty old and certainly I can't find this company any more so I guess a replacement is needed but there are so many options. Over to you :) Image Unavailable, Please Login

If you haven’t already done so, you should probably have a visit with the shop that maintained the car for your father. Presumably there are some service records that would lead you to the right place.

Angus, speak to Stefan in the Netherlands. https://www.elshoutengineering.com/ He builds replacement solutions for the Dinoplex and can also supply a replacement distributor with modern electronics in place of bob weights, this will be your best route to a reliable ignition system. Do not buy a 123 based system- they don’t work well in Dinos.
