never seen that but I would imagine taking them off (meaning the bumper needs to come off) and a bath of white vinegar or equivalent should take care of the oxidation. then a good rinse, a coat of paint, and you should be done for a couple of years at least.
Thanks for the reply, sounds like a good idea. Is removing the bumbers a big effort (and therefore will be expensive)? I have the same on the front and on the side of the car aswell. Only ones that's not been affected is the ones by the tail lights on the images above (and they are not getting close to as hot as the other ones).
Removing the bumper is not particularly complicated (not more than on another car) but it takes a little bit of time as you need to remove a lot of screws, cables, clips etc. Best to have the manual ready before tackling that.
Good to know I'm not the only one. Mine are particularly so esp with them hitting tons of bugs while driving. I don't plan to do anything to them until they fall off from fully rusted and completely open up
Anyone who fixed them by repainting them? The big cost seems to be the (de)mounting. The issue should appear again in a few years I guess? Buying new ones is really expensive (about 5-6k including mounting).
Last April while lockdown I cleaned mines with a little copper brush and painted them meticulously with a "heatproof" paint, they are still correct so far. (The brush I used to paint was smaller than the one on the pic, I sprayed some paint from the aerosol in a "bowl" and did the job) Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't know if that is from heat. I had the same thing on my right front intake grill. I just used a couple different cleaning agents and several toothbrushes and eventually got it pretty clean. I have no idea why it was only on one side. Possibly since that is the curb side maybe it was subjected to more dirt from puddles or just road dust. Does anyone know what those grills are actually made of, I don't think they are metal. The rear grills on my 612 are metal and did rust. I had them removed and nickel plated.
Look at the image in my original post. Compare the two. All of my mesh grills get very hot, except from the ones that look like new. So I still think heat is involved, maybe in combination with something else.. Can you post a picture of the mesh grill that you cleaned?
Image Unavailable, Please Login Well the reason I'm not sure it is from heat is it looks like my front grill before I cleaned it and there is no heat there. Do you have that on both sides? I don't have a before picture, but if you look at the very top you can see staining similar to yours. That is how my whole grill looked. If these grills are made of metal, they must have some sort of plastic coating.
Yes, I have on both rear sides, a little on the sides of the car and a little on the front grills. Yes, I agree. It's probably metal with some kind of plastic coating or paint. It's probably not heat in the first place that creates it, but maybe moisture and heat makes it worse or something... I'm gonna get it fixed anyway. I got an offer to make it exactly as original, but they wanted about 3k, which I think is a bit much (probably more than half was for mounting/demounting though), but if I don't find any better I'll go with that. I'll come back with the result. I expect it to be as new, just hope that I don't get the same problem in like 2-3 years again.
