    Hello

I was out today in the 812 GTS and in a tunnel with a friend. I was going about 60mph in 5th and downshifted twice which caused an admittedly awesome noise and a spike in revs. I then accelerated in the tunnel and left him giggling like a school girl.

Afterwards, he said that was bad for the engine to cause it to spike in revs.

Any thoughts on this? Are these engines designed for this or is it load which will damage in the long run?

    thanks

The engines are absolutely designed for those revs. That is exactly what is supposed to happen when you downshift two gears.

I drive a 458 Spider and not an 812 GTS. Any time I drive through a tunnel I downshift two gears to hear the sound echo. If I'm not going particularly fast I'll up shift twice, just so I can then down shift two gears. This is not bad for the engine. If it was bad for the engine it would still probably be worth it.

[I'm not an engineer but] I would expect the clutch[es] to fail before the engine internals blew out, but even then, the computer figures these things out to match revs and it should not damage the engine.

In reality you can do 60mph in 2nd, not 3rd, so you were probably very safe. The sound is what spooked him.

It is absolutely fine for the car. If it wasn’t, the car wouldn’t let you do it.

Put your 812 up on a lift and remove the first two bottom covers. Stand below the engine block and look up. For sure it is made for that. Massive engine and drive train with just enough chassis to hold it together. Enjoy. :)

Page 120 of the 812SF manual:

    "DOWN-shifting

Use the left-hand DOWN paddle without releasing the accelerator pedal. A DOWN-shift request is not accepted if engagement of the requested gear forces the engine beyond a certain RPM, depending on the gear requested,or if a DOWN-shift is already in progress because of engine underrevving."

The transmission knows all. The car won't do it it it's a bad idea. if the car does it, then it is a great idea!

About the only thing that sounds better than a Ferrari spiking to 8500+ revs is a Ducati spiking to 11000 + revs and really the only thing better than both of them is doing it in a tunnel!

That's nonsense. Ask him what he bases that statement on. Some people like to sound clever like they know it all.

He probably said that because whatever he drives does not sound anything like that legendary V12 that will not be around forever. You did the right thing…..made him giggle like a school girl

I agree. I’d love to know the basis behind your friend’s comment.
