What happened is very typical when an old part of unknown history is installed onto a ropey old car. No wonder the supplier gave him he big A. Who wouldn't? The OP's expectations are actually quite hilarious all things considering. Essentially, all he's successfully managed to do so far is offer himself up as a bit of free entertainment.

Ropey old car ? Recently purchased from a main dealer, why is it ropey ? Seems a bit unfair.

Very fair comment or perhaps you've forgotten it's July 2021 and the car is now nearly 8 years old?

Just because a dealer sold it doesn't make it new again.;)

Seems entirely unfair or is every car over 7 years old ropey in your mind?

Firstly, Welcome to the real world!

    Reality can indeed be unfair!

And just because it’s a Ferrari or more money was paid for a particular car doesnt turn back time.

8 years old is very much an old car and it shows in many ways as well as how it drives. Probably why OP hunted around for a used exhaust to save a few bucks much as what he was looking to do when he bought the old 458. How many owners and how many miles do you think an 8 year old cars done? - not that a one owner will make it any younger lol.

Most view a car older than 4 years old, particularly when the car in question has changed physically and feels less resolved to drive vs the later versions.

For all we know OPs car is a ropey old humpty car with a range of mechanical issues associated to wear and tear one would expect to find on an 8 year old car. Even if the car was barely driven over an 8 year period many components become “time worn”. The muffler is clearly blown out and the level of damage didn’t just happen after a quick drive around the block.

Far too many unanswered questions remain and now OP’s taken off as he knew by answering, his argument was blown just like like his muffler. If he had bought a new muffler he may have had a leg to stand on but he didn’t which only further goes to confirm this ropey old humpty couldn’t have been worth throwing any more money at.

Anway, if you want to keep pretending an 8 year old car isnt old just because it has a Ferrari badge on it, thats fine by me.

First of all the OP's 458 is most certainly NOT a old ropey car.. It was an immaculate 2014 car with just 6.5k miles. I know the dealer he bought it from as its the same dealer i buy my Ferraris from. Its the most successful Ferrari dealer in the whole of Europe and UK in terms of number of Ferraris sold annually. The sticking intake manifold tuning flaps are very common to 458s and happened to my old one.
The problem arose after the OP took possession of his nice original 458 and set upon it like a man possessed to undo everything which was good on it by various modifications. This involved fitting used aftermarket exhausts, ECU tuning, exhaust valve controllers and god knows what else.! This will 100% totally invalidate the Dealer's Power warranty which is a disaster in itself.
He's created an awful situation for himself by totally unnecessary meddling straight after taking delivery, rather than enjoy what was a very nice 458 out of the box. During all this he'll have pissed off his supplying dealer due to all this nonsense.
He appears to have done quite well in life for a 30+yr old guy which i applaud but lacks common sense and maturity. I'm a Welshman and we have an old saying in welsh which roughly translates to ''Its the old that know but its the young that doubt ! '' and this is a classic example.

I tend to agree. And now we have the 458 protection brigade arriving on the scene pretending an 8 year old car isn't old. This is getting truly hilarious! Im getting some popcorn for this. This is shaping up to be getting better than even the OP's tale of woe. I love the dealer loyalty story - fabulous! Its like the dealer is selling brand new 8 year old cars LMAO!!!

And the story of him being a 30 y/o also make sense in that he probably wouldn't have unlimited funds, so buying the old Ferrari and the used exhaust is quite plausible. The poor guy has unfortunately mugged himself in the course of wrapping a label around himself so its only natural he is going have a bit of a squeal over doing his money. You cant hammer him too much for that. His hip pocket got hurt and he is just expressing his emotions and angst and, was hoping those more better off would have been able to step up and cover him for the errors of his poor decision making in the course of getting that Ferrrari Badge under his collar. That'd be the short and long of it. And yes the whole Paypal fallback was a total cack ....like as if they are going to do anything lol.

At least you’ve had the decency to stop saying all 8 year old cars are ropey and now are just old. Are you a Ferrari owner ? If so, a little more charity might go a long way.

I've been very charitable and honest in my approach to what indeed appears to be the reality of the situation.

And am I a Ferrari owner? More to the point are you? Or should I take a wild stab and guess you're a 458 owner lol.

In the best case scenario, paypal will reimburse the purchase price of a bought item if it is not delivered or it is defective upon arrival with genuine proof.. In your case, you will never see a refund of even your purchase price.

Well clearly the court of public opinion didn’t go in his favor and if PayPal doesn’t rule in his favor I guess he is SOL. Lol.

When it comes to refunds, PayPal is no longer what it was years ago. Very strict guidelines apply. Never delivered, item different than purchased, item is substantially damaged or non functional. Report to PayPal must be in a timely manner after receipt of goods. Only the price paid for the item is refundable.

This case does not comply to any of the above conditions.

Comparing antiquities and relics of history, especially of extinct species, is not in the same realm as a comparison of a decades old car relative to the latest vehicles. Not to speak for Shadowfax, but he is referencing the driving dynamics and overall capabilities of the 458 to a Pista. He concludes that in that comparison , the 458 seems substantively out dated.

I was referencing a few things actually, yet suddenly found myself having to contend with protectionism over the 458 from some of the 458 crowd who were feeling a little insecure over certain realities lol.

It was like the focus suddenly shifted completely away from the OPs dilemma and onto me for my simply drawing attention to the fact OP’s 458 was an old car…..and quite likely a pretty ropey one too.:)

I guess this reality was a bit hard for some here to deal with lol. So then in the course of their futile battle for integrity, a dealer was then bought into play as some pathetic form of defence in hope of downplaying the reality that the 458 was indeed an old car now - which seemingly crushed a few fragile egos.

The fact remains that OP was clearly only trying to operate within his financial means - and there is no crime in that - however, he unfortunately burnt his fingers trying to save a buck at both ends of the stick and was looking for support and at least a bit of sympathy yet instead received a solid roasting from all and sundry.

Man oh man... in this age of AI, you'd think there'd be some sort of deep learning system that would know to automatically lock down Shadowfax's account anytime he starts posting about the 458; and yet, there isn't.

In this day and age of AI there should also be a means to digitally issue boxes of tissues when fragile egos become crushed in the course of offering opinion to an OP which involves commentary on the now old and outated 458.:):D
