I assume the extra zip ties and solid hose help reduce engine movement when revving the engine

And to keep the idle valve from falling off the Y pipe to which it is loosely attached. It also acts to keep the T-hose from coming detached.

120,000 miles of driving does have a way of wearing things out. If there ever was a 355 that needs an engine out, this is it.

How rigid is the new pipe? I wouldn't want the Y-pipe or elbows to crack.

No Pete, this car belongs to a dear friend who works in Bahrain overseas and is back for a short stint. The car was towed to my place with the complaint "its running like a Volkswagen." I opened the lid to find the hose cracked in two places, and one of the spark plug holes full of rusty water. We can buy a spark plug but we cannot get an ignition wire or a hose the same day. So to get him back home, I gave him a spark plug wire from my stash and we went to Home Depot to get a 3 inch heater exhaust hose. Yes, it's a valid repair but .... damn that is not right. Knowing him, he is leaving again for the middle east in 2 weeks and he will just leave it that way until I do an engine out next year.

    Yes, the 3-inch version.
The other alternative was going to be a plastic 3-inch wide empty bottle of brake fluid, cut to size.

Wonder if the wall thickness would be enough to prevent it from collapsing.:)

I would be proud of the modification, Elliott. I wouldn't dare powder coat it. :)
