Congrats on purchase. Expect to have some electrical gremlins but this forum will get you most/all of the solutions.

My car is very close to the same color. Mine was resprayed a very close match to the original as seen by unpainted door jams. The color code sticker was removed when repainted so I have only been guessing the original color. See pic in close to same lighting as your picture.

I think yours is a lovely colour and I can see the resemblance in mine. Hopefully I don’t need too much help from the forum but it’s nice to know that help is available. The cars is getting quite a bit of work carried out now in Italy so hopefully most gremlins will be sorted by the time I get to see it for the first time! I’m looking really forward to driving it home around the end of September

    Thanks Ewan!
That’s a fine looking car you’ve got there. As I haven’t seen mine in person yet, is there a paint code for Prugna that I can look out for on the cars paperwork?
Is it a rare colour in these cars?

Yes - there is a paint code. I’ll look it up for you when I get to my office (where my car paperwork is).
And yes, it is a rare colour. No idea of numbers, but given most 400 you see are blue, silver, black, etc, less than once a year might I see one in Prugna.
Prugna is a dark burgundy - quite brown, slightly purple. Obviously I’ve only seen one picture of your car, but it looks a bit lighter than Prugna. If you look up the Ferrari colour chart from 1983 (approx), hopefully you’ll be able to determine what colour you have.
And if you don’t have it already, if it’s a UK RHD car you’ll be able to obtain the original order/build info from Tony Willis, and this will show details of the original spec, colour, etc.

Congrats on your fine 400i ! The colour is Rosso Metallizzato, which is quite rare. I don't know if you know the history, but it was sold new to Shaun Bealey, the deputy Chairman of Maranello Concessionaires, on 1 January 1982 and then to the late Peter Stubberfield on 7 June 1982 (who part-exchanged a Daytona). Peter Stubberfield was the Chairman of the Ferrari Owners Club. It later went to Bologna. This 400i has a number of special features, such as the exposed front auxiliary lights, Cavallino on the front grille, all black centre console, all black Nardi steering wheel and dark bonnet vents. It was featured in "Ferrari the Road Cars" by Keith Bluemel.

There were 31 RHD 400iGTs produced, of which 22 were Series 1's like yours (and of those 22, at least 18 are believed to still exist).

Thank you Ewan for all that info, I am beginning to suspect that it isn't in fact Prugna! I was using my phone when looking at your car but now I'm on my laptop I can see that your car is a much deeper colour, almost like plum I'm thinking! i will look up a chart from the early eighties if I can find one and see if it gives me a better clue. I can post several more photos if that's alright to do? I don't want clogging up the forum. I would love to have the info you mention as it was first registered in the UK and then taken to Italy. Is Tony Willis on here or if not where do I contact him? Thanks again, Paul.

Wow! I definitely came to the right place to find out about my new car, which I haven't even seen yet :) I've never even heard of that colour before, I'll be getting the search engines later to find out as much as I can about it. I don't know any of the history apart from the person I bought it from was the widow of the man who took it to Italy back in 1998. She is quite famous and she and her family own a large well know fashion house! I am delighted to know that history before it went to Italy and you are correct in saying Bologna. In fact, it is currently in a Ferrari specialist (who specializes even further as they mainly work on classic and vintage Ferraris and Maseratis) having work carried out. Knowing these facts about the car really has made my day so thank you very much David for taking the time to tell me about it. I will of course now have to spend about 2 hours looking for that book too :)
    Cheers, Paul.

David, I’ve looked up that colour, Rosso Metallizzato and it looks a lot brighter but maybe Google is just concentrating on the word Rosso and I’m not getting to see a Rosso Metallizatto at all! Here are a few more photos, maybe they’ll help solve this mini mystery.
Ewan, if you get that code it would certainly narrow it down. Thanks again to you both.

I agree with above. My 'research' has pointed me to my original color was Rosso Metallizzato.

I’m certain it’s too light to be Prugna.
If you can’t find contact details for Tony Willis on the Internet don’t worry - I have them in my file in the office so can get them tomorrow. He is the owner of the records from the days when Maranello UK were the UK importers, so he’ll have all the original build and sale details.

Hi Paul, just to confirm that the colour Rosso Metallizzato is noted in the original factory records for your car - and it also appears to be that colour now (I have seen one in person). The shade of Connolly leather is called "Tabacco VM846". It was built in 1981, first registered 1 January 1982 on the registration 77 SPB (Shaun Bealey's initials, the plate was used on other 400s and 412s). Peter Stubberfield transferred the registration "KMJ 2" onto the car when he bought it in 1982; the plate had previously been on his Daytona (s/n 13931). This is the registration you will find in Keith Bluemel's book. Paul Baber sold the car to Peter Stubberfield, you can contact him on Instagram - "ferrari250swb". I don't have much information after the late 80s, Subberfield still owned it in 1986 and it could have been owned by a David Alston in 1990 before it eventually made its way to Furla.

    Stubberfield's Daytona by the way:

Thanks Ewan, yes it is by weight of evidence Rosso Metallizzato and I was able to find two email addresses for Tony WIllis and have sent an email to both so hopefully one of them is correct :)
It would be lovely to have all those original records for the car!

Thanks again David, you must have a copy of the archives yourself as your knowledge is extraordinary but very welcome indeed! Though I am still wondering how you knew the name of the fashion house! :)

All that I know about its history is that its last reg in the UK before it went to Italy was XBC 224X and it was last taxed in the UK in 1994. It was then registered in Italy in July 1998. I presume the gentleman who last bought it and took it to Italy was the husband of the widowed lady that I bought it from.
I am intrigued to hear that you have only seen one in this Rosso Metallizzato colour, it might very well be then that is the only rhd and manual one in that colour which would be nice!

That Daytona of David Stubberfield's is a thing of beauty and amazing in that colour. I am on Instagram myself so will look him up. My instagram address is www.instagram.com/paulvgartlan

Thanks again for all your help,

    Paul.

Thanks for the details of the last UK reg, I didn't have that in my database. It looks like Peter Stubberfield kept it until 20 February 1992, when the third and last UK owner acquired it, before it went to Italy. Peter died in 2009, aged 98 and it was his last Ferrari. You can read about him (and the car) in Ferrari Competition News, issue 41, Jan/Feb 2009 (google will take you to issuu.com). Interesting to read Peter stating " it used to go like the clappers. Shaun had ordered the car with Daytona cams and the engine was quite superb". Special car indeed!

There were actually three 400i RHD manuals painted Rosso Metallizzato, one has the same colour interior as yours (and I have no trace of that car).

Somebody posted a picture of your car outside Furla's HQ on Facebook (June 2013) - that's how I spotted it!

I've attached the 400i I saw that was also painted Rosso Metallizzato (an auto).

Paul, sorry for the terrible photo, I was using film that was too fast. This photograph was taken by me in the Silverstone Paddock during the Jaguar Drivers Club annual meet in April 1982. Shaun Bealey is sitting in the car.

Peter Stubberfield's Daytona was not repainted in the correct shade. The owner who had the work done chose something slightly different.
