Yeah in the old days…When I was on the jumbo I never looked at anything else…Unfortunately the bean counters decided the Jumbo was no longer viable so they disappeared from the pax flying very quickly to make way for the light twins…When I came onto the 777 from the 747 it certainly felt like a light twin compared to the old girl…IMO the Jumbo variants and the DC8 were the best jets I ever flew…As for the 380 we never got involved with that HOS as they must have thought it was always going to be a white elephant…Jumbos these days are the work horses of the Cargo world…A380s are parked in bone yards…
Cheers - yeah, the A380 is/was a one trick pony. They should have been built to take freight. As I understand they’re not viable for freight conversion because the floors/structure can’t take the weight.
Gary does Polar Air still fly into Melbourne , I haven't see one fly over in Kew for ages . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Best plane I've ever been in as a passenger by a significant margin. Obviously I haven't flown one OLIO
I’m guessing the weight and the electronics give a pretty smooth ride. I’m hoping to fly on one at some point, but not sure that will happen.
Essentially it’s late 50s technology and still going strong…Incredible design that’s been tweaked over the years…
The pilots seem to chuck 'em around more then the CP and Singa cargo 747s and throttle the power more as they went over .....happy times
A380, nope. Have flown on B762 and B763, B744, B772, B773, A300-B4, (CX) A343, A332 and A333, A320 and A321, B734, B737 and B738. And did aerobatics with ex-RAAF Roulette in his DHC-1 Chipmunk, which is the only aircraft I’ve actually flown!
Stop picking on PSW and stop posting electric car crap and we’ll be fine. Silly signature here to annoy KIAI
and not a 747 ? When last flew to the UK with BA from Singapore ,I wanted to go on the 747...missed by a day when they changed the flight schedule .to a 380 To young to have but , i remember so well flying on QANTAS/PAN AM 707s and DC8 (can't rememeber the operator )
Me too. Although I’m told the Dreamliner 787 is even better. Supposedly a fair bit quieter. Haven’t been on one. Yet. Never flown one though. [emoji41]
Yes, have flown on QF 744 and SQ 744. I’d forgotten a few types (A300, B777, so edited my post). I’d have loved to fly on the B707 and the DC-8 - just a tad before my time, and I reckon those were serious aircraft that a pilot needed to fly, and not the other way around (the plane flying the pilot). I’m guessing (Gary can confirm), the last of that era was the B744, and perhaps in the modern era, only the B738 comes close to the old school jets.
