I found this photo of a microburst rainstorm over Phoenix; sure looks like a nuclear mushroom cloud! Trying to fly through it could be just as deadly.

Flew around one just like that yesterday as it was dumping on top of Mingus mountain east of Prescott AZ. It was surreal. I was flying from Cottonwood to Prescott and the thing was right between the two. Needless to say, I took a pretty generous detour around it. PRC tower cleared me to land when I called them just popping over the mountains 20 miles away. There wasn’t another plane flying...anywhere. AZ flyers have a healthy fear of boomers. For good reason...two of my planes got taken out by a tornado on the deck at a PRC just two weeks ago. Almost the entire Embry-Riddle fleet was damaged and non-airworthy afterward. Crazy stuff, weather.

Drive into that and additional thrust might be the last thing on your mind.
