Put my 99 gated 360 Modena on a dyno, just out of curiosity. Not interested in pissing fights about whp, just sharing with the community. fresh belt and hydraulic tensioners (!!!$$$$!!!) on. sport cats Challenge exhaust According to the shop, their dyno reads about 5.6% (very exact here) lower vs reference from the dyno manufacturer. i am pretty happy of the result, maybe a tune in the future…? Can't wait for you to getbthe tune and see where it goes from there. I should have dynoed mine before the tune
What tune did you get and how was your experience? I really did not purchase the 360 for power, the emotions of driving a 360 go further than its power figures. I would have probably stuck with my 996 Turbo if that was what I wanted. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Is that wheel horsepower? Shouldn't a stock 360 put down around 360whp (assuming 405hp with 11% drive train loss)?
Camrys aren't making 340whp. Although some tuners love to quote drivetrain loss as a percentage, it doesn't really work that way in practice. If you wanted to quote a % at maximum RPM, 15% would be more realistic. That's ~60hp on the 360 (15% of 395hp). But you also have to remember that Ferrari is extremely generous with their HP ratings. Most 360s are probably making 370-380hp. ~340whp is a good number. Just over 400hp at the crank with 15% DTL. Sounds about right to me given the mods and the fact that a bone stock car makes less than the advertised power.
Well yes, obviously it is at the wheels…assuming what the tuner said is true (5.6% lower reading), the whp would be actually closer to 355. I think the answer to your question is “depends”. Altitude, temperature at the time of the dyno, type of dyno, car maintenance (plugs age, MAF age etc) and many other variables influence the output of a dyno run. Mind me asking where did you get the 11% drivetrain loss? Is it a standard for mid engine cars? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Maybe this is a bit of a rant, maybe not. But to me Ferrari owners complaining about the low (by today standards) power of a car that is 22 years old and therefore out of production is just plain silly. I dynoed my car because I was curious, not because I want a baseline to make more power. Had I bought a new 812 and it made 150hp less… well I would be pissed and wrote a letter to Ferrari. But in the case of the 360, who cares? It is such an event driving it, like going to an opera theater for the first time (or AC/DC concert if that’s your jam). So much drama, presence, noise. The conversation is well above the mere “A camry can pass you”. One of the other “camry can pass you” cars I have had and that I loved and still do dearly is vastly underpowered compare to its competition. Yet there are few cars that are more fun to drive than a Honda S2000, which had a claimed power of 240 but good luck seeing that. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
S2000s actually do make the claimed power, unlike most Ferraris. And they were significantly more powerful than the competition (Mazda Miata). Agree wholeheartedly otherwise. I had a 470whp (stock) M4 GTS and the 360 is much more engaging to drive. Certainly slower around a track, but not really the point...
A lot of comments are coming from the guy that "less miles is more money " love what your doing and everything is different. I bought a not perfect 360 to make it more perfect than the guy that bought the Bat car. Let's just have some real # and thank you for doing this because too much talk on power.
I had 2 S2000 and my whp experience has been the opposite than what you claim. Additionally, I believe that MX5s were not the competition for the S2000: more like the Boxster or the BWM M. Regardless, it is undeniable that on the street the s2000 felt underpowered: no wonder, it gets to 9k revs! It will not wow your passenger around town, but give it a windy stretch of road and you are all smiles Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
My old AP1 dyno'd at 203-5whp. Claimed power was 240hp. Assuming 18% DTL, that's 247hp. The Boxster and Z3 M were much more expensive cars (Boxster S >$51k, Z3 M Roadster $46k, S2000 $32k, top trim MX-5 $26k). It certainly was lifeless and lacked torque before the cam switchover. The 360 is much better in that regard.
Short of getting a "tune", what can we do to get the most out of these cars? Is it worth proactively changing spark plugs, MAFs, Coil packs, throttle bodies, etc? Some part of me wants to not spend money on stuff that isn't broken, but I have a feeling that most of these cars don't run like they did 20 years ago either. /
Maybe 10 to 15 hp’s? Probably the biggest gain was the weight loss!! As far as maintenance, I do plan on changing MAF and plugs and coils eventually just because of age. I know the old adage of if it ain’t broken don’t fix it but I feel that preventive maintenance is a good thing. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Might try cleaning the injectors before the rest of this here. People have written it made a sig diff. I haven't done mine yet at 45K Plugs should be done at 25K or so...made a difference with my 04. HTH
My GTI makes 308 power figures. It's not even remotely close to the driving experience a 308 provides. There's *SO* much more than horsepower. It's just a mathematical figure anyway....it doesn't mean anything in and of itself. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.
I drove 911's for years. Not the fastest, not the king of the streets or track. But like many have said: there's more to it than that. My 360 Challenges me way beyond my old 911s... and I love it.
