Hi everyone! My name is Kay. Im from Colorado Springs. My 612 rear trunk caught on fire. I was repairing some of the cables in the trunk in the last couple of months. Right now I fixed everything but still has the number plate light fault showing on the screen. I have the diagnostic tool to delete code like I did for other fault codes after they have been repaired, so delete code is not a solution here. The lights can be turned on but when I switch the lighting switch on the dashboard to off position, the number plate lights are still on but just dimmer then when they were ON. I checked the related pins inside its cable connector and found 4-6 volt sending out when it’s on OFF position. So I think somewhere on the electrical system cables has a leaking voltage passed to the number plate lights because of the fire has melted some rubber cable sleeves somewhere that gives these number plate light 4-6 Volt even when it’s at OFF. I have to trace the cable to find the contacting point where passes power to the plate lights cable. But I also need you guys help me to confirm that the license plate lights would complete shuts off when you guys turn the lighting switch on the dashboard to off position( it’s an O in the middle). If you guys can also see dimmer lights in your car when it’s at OFF, then my hypothesis is wrong. I don’t have a same model car to compare so I’m just guessing. Please help! Thanks!

    Hi Keke,

Great to have in the forum. Welcome.

On my 612, when the lighting switch is on "0" position, the plate lights are completely OFF.

    Good luck!

Does it look like the boot ecu (just next to the battery) has seen significant heat during the fire? If so, I would be suspecting it to be at fault.

I saw a salvage 612 with trunk fire also so this makes 2 (unless this is the black one from CA). Not a high number but a little concerning to think there may be a design issue. Do you know exactly where the fire started? Was it those wires or further forward or the ECU?

It could be. But I don’t see anything burned behind the battery trim. Just the black smoke on some parts that I can wipe off. I will do a further check on the ECU. Good thoughts! Thanks!

Yes. That’s the one. I don’t know if it’s the wire somewhere melted together the leaking power or the ECU. I just started work on this last issue yesterday. The carpets were all removed before I purchased it. And 3 faults was found in the system that caused by 2 cables that was burned in the fire. Lid lock cable and the the rear parking sensor cable which also has the number plate lights on it. I replaced all of them but just the number plates light would still be halfway on when it on off. This is the only fault I got before I am going to get the rebuild title. I have upgraded the radio to 7 inch pioneer touch screen and all the carpets/trims ready to put back in the trunk. Cost me almost $2000 for all the parts.

Hey friends! I figured out something interesting that our 612 will NOT take LED number plate light bulbs. It will give you a license plate fault message/CODE even the LED bulbs are perfectly working. Also the LED bulbs will half way light up when you switch them to OFF. While the old school lights will be completely off. Nevertheless, in the passenger compartment, these dome lights can be replaced to LED lights. I already replaced blue and purple color lights all working properly without fault message.

Good to know. It comes down to the spec of the LED bulbs. Many will have a load resistor to mimic incandescents and protect the diode but if not within the spec the lighting module is looking for it will show a fault as it is assuming an active bulb is not there. In your case given the fire it might be prudent to figure out what the normal conditions should be so as not to reproduce the event. I wonder if the relayed current (probably a high voltage transistor from the lighting module) is being sent incorrectly. Sending a current to the bulbs at all times seems inappropriate... I don't have the shop manual but others do here. That vehicle seemed a reasonable buy. Was the rear bumper worth saving with just sanding and repainting or more that that?

The rear bumper was just sand and repaint. Costed me 575 bucks. The carpets in the trunk are so expensive. I spent nearly $2000 over all. But now it’s all good. No fault to be found in the system. Good to register.

I don't know if this would help, but Pacific is parting out a 612 and they have this rear tail light harness assembly available.

Yea, I noticed that. I got the pioneer touch screen from that car. Thanks tho! I was needed the trunk lid lock cable and the parking sensor cable with the number plate lights attached. But I got these 2 cables already. Any other cables and parts are perfect in this car except the trunk carpets. It’s 100% now. I just can’t believe they would total this car for carpets and 2 cables in the trunk. Clean accident/ collision report. Just a $2k repair send it back to road.
