That's a fair point and I agree. Also, owning a car from new and knowing that it's only ever been handled by your good self is a nice feeling. It also removes potential concerns about the condition of a car and whether it has been properly maintained. But there's normally a price to pay for that "just so" car you want and being the first to own it straight from the factory (ie depreciation). As Mr Massini puts it, you have to pay to play ....
You make some very good points. Parking any Ferrari in a parking lot is never easy. I would see a Ferrari SUV less as a DD; more for occasions that require a 4 seat Ferrari. A know many people use their 2 seater Ferraris as their DD. A 4 seater Ferrari would probably be even easier for couples, families to justify as a DD. A lot of people in my neck of the woods drive Urus(Uri/Uruses?) as DDs. They are very popular with both males, females/moms. I think a lot of these Urus customers would have no problem paying for a Ferrari SUV and using it as a DD if they could get hold of one quickly. That is one of the interesting things about the Urus - they are selling extremely well in my area and yet new ones are readily available because of a steady flow of them arriving at the showroom. Urus customers may not be willing to wait 1 or 2 years to get a Ferrari SUV so I am not sure how that will play out ...
True that. The Puro is already being primed for showtime. And it will sell well. To me, the more interesting question is whether Ferrari's can light up the currently drab high-end SUV sector.
Ferrari is a multi BILLION dollar company. They're not a small factory in Maranello anymore. Your romanticism is nice and all but let's not forget the facts. Also, it seems that people are forgetting that the Purosangue will enable to Ferrari to do even more of what we love from them already. The profits of that car will go towards a Sh** ton of R&D.
The world has changed. The homologation has changed. The rules have changed. To produce automobiles is a crazy capital intensive proposition. They need to build an SUV to remain profitable and to make even better road CARS. They likely need to fund there change to EV eventually and this will be how they get there. Without the cayenne you would never have the Carrera gt or the gt2/3/rs cars. Ever. You wouldn't even have manual.porsches without the cayenne and panamera. This is automotive fact. If you want Ferrari to last as a company and not go bankrupt you need the suv. If you want Ferrari to stay on top.of their game... You need the suv. Any romance of the limited production cars besides the 7 figure cars is silly. They built over 20k 458s folks. Your car isn't rare. They will make less mustang gt500s. The people who long for the vintage Ferraris can go buy one. You can't build cars that way anymore. Emissions and safety standards are too varied across the globe. Limited runs aren't worth doing unless deep into the figures. You can't afford to homologate the head and tail lights.for every country otherwise. In order for Ferrari not to die a slow death and become a laughing stock along the way... They need the suv. Also if Lamborghini has it and it is doing well... Which it is. You have to do it. That market is massive. That market makes massive money. The silver lining on this cloud is that Ferrari will make so much cash they will be able to build some of the coolest sports cars the world has ever seen and that's what I care about.
I respect your view, except I don't feel silly! I understand that my comments might sound over-romantic to some, but my key point was - and still is - that the idea to find someday a Ferrari at 5.000 € in a scrapyard makes me feel somehow uncomfortable about the management of the brand. Period. All the other implications about the market and the profitability are obvious, but to me a brand and a company are something that go beyond the instant opportunity of a market segment. I don't think that the 458 desirability is due only to rarity, because it is clear that even if built in relatively large numbers they will always preserve some desirability. They were built in more than 20.000 units but they will always be aspirational, and imho they will never end in scrapyards. In my opinion, a brand able to make cars (I mean, cars!) that will never end in a scrapyard is something different. Probably one unconventional way for Ferrari to avoid the scrapyard nightmare (sorry but for me it is) would be to buy-back the Purosangue once they get worn out and near-worthless, i.e. when they reach the market price of 30-40.000 €, and destroy them. This way the lowering volumes will foster some desirability - or the extinction of the specie if no long term desirability is possible. Oh, and who pays for this? The first owner, sure, i.e. pricing the F car 40.000 € higher than the "normal" price without this not-so-crazy (???) program. Then I would possibly consider the Purosangue idea... p.s. how cool to write in red on a F forum?
The FUV will only make Ferrari stronger and able to do more things. You may hate the Cayenne, but I suspect one of the reasons Porsche continues to offer standard transmissions is because they can afford to do so.
there's some discussion that ferrari might be able to make petrol cars into the future and be exempt from regulations if this happens then ferrari don't need an SUV and have a massive opportunity for a cheaper car to steal lots of sales from porsche
I have seen this point before perhaps It was you that made it. I don't agree with it... But that's ok. That's what's important to you. It's not to many... But.... There have already been Ferraris "scrapped" there are entire businesses dedicated to scrapped Ferraris. There have been plenty of 308 348s some 355s 456 mondial 308 gt4s. Testarossa has been scraped. I'll remind you that even a 250 gto was abandoned in a field.and used in a high school shop class. 250 of coupes were scrapped. A laundry list of previous old Ferraris have been scrapped.
Well, yes and no, in my opinion. Don't you think that Pagani is somehow romantic, out of our over-economized times, yet quite profitable? Between 2015 and 2019 he grew the turnover from 42 to 100 M€ and the net profits from 6 to 27,7 M€. Ferrari isn't like this anymore just because usually romance just gets scrapped when the founder goes away and the company is handed to managers and stock holders, but I am not sure that sentimentality is necessary an enemy of any good business. Just my opinion.
Well, I fully agree that technically few F-cars had to be scrapped in time (how many? 1% 0,1% ?), but I just meant that none went that way as a model, that not a single F-car technically ended up like the Cayenne yet.
Porsche Cayenne! Try to remember when this was launched. All the negativity! Ask any 911 fanatic now who criticized the Cayenne. They won’t be enjoying the 100 variations of the 911 without the Cayenne.
The idea of Ferrari S.p.A. becoming insolvent and closing down due to insufficient revenue makes me far more uncomfortable than your proposition. I wear a Ferrari watch, but they are not a watchmaker. I have Ferrari jackets and caps, but they are not a clothing manufacturer. I have a Ferrari photo book on my coffee table, but they are not a book publisher. But all these things contribute to their viability as a business and just because they sell things that are not sports cars does not make me love the brand less, nor diminish the marvellous history of the greatest marque in Motorsport history. So they’re going to make an FUV. Fine. If it speaks to my soul, I’ll probably buy it. If it’s an abomination like their current clothing line, I wont. But I will still love the brand above all others. P.S. I dislike your use of reds and bolds. They grate on my appreciation of clean messaging… kind of like the idea of an FUV. LOL
Sorry to make you uncomfortable, I thought that red and bold made the reading more engaging. I will go back to plain black. Personally I do not think that any FUV is strictly necessary for financial reasons to guarantee the survival of the brand, but I respect your opinion.
I like the passion but really question the naivety. Exor controls the most shares, and can easily defeat any "proxy" vote. The reality is Ferrari is growing and has to change with the times. It used to be really slow, and now it's quicker... but in the Automotive worked still slow. If Ferrari were to stop development of the Purosange.... it would be a huge waste of resources... and writedown, at the same time as impact from COVID etc... don't think idle factories don't impact the Ferrari bottom line. they do. The market will decide if an SUV from Ferrari is a good idea. I think they will, and I predict lots of use cheaper Ferrari's in 5 years....
Well, at this point I think that the project cannot be stopped and that we might even close the discussion here . Odd enough, most who wrote comments were in favour of the FUV, but the poll had 28 votes against and 17 in favour. All the best to you all and thank you for joining. Always if someone does not want to add anything else.
I hate, but even in a die hard ferraristi forum like this the SUV has 1/3 of approval votes. So any resistance would be futile.
https://www.ferrarilakeforest.com/ferrari-purosangue-preview/ The 2023 Ferrari Purosangue is more than an SUV — it’s the first SUV produced by Ferrari, a Ferrari Utility Vehicle, if you will. While Ferrari’s new SUV is sure to turn heads around Chicago if you’re out running errands, it’s a Ferrari. Performance and handling will be unlike any other vehicle in its class; it would feel just as welcome on the track as the road. Defining the Ferrari Utility Vehicle (FUV) The upcoming Ferrari Purosangue is the first vehicle of its kind, and calling it a simple SUV is limiting. Every vehicle produced in Maranello belongs in a class of its own, but each has developed imitators and competitors over the years. By combining Ferrari’s uncompromising performance and unique aesthetic, the Purosangue becomes the first vehicle of its kind. So we’re calling it an FUV, a spacious four-passenger utility vehicle with room for family or friends.
Anyway, I am sure a FUV will sell well but in the end I guess I am just a 2 plus 2 kinda guy… Image Unavailable, Please Login
