Agree but guys keep at it too long then fade. Shumacher did that and to some degree alonso too. Look at vettel? I think if he quit after 4 WDC's and nver had the disaster that was his time at Ferrari we might even call him the GOAT be we will never know because he retired early. Now he looks like a guy who is washed up. LH needs to go out on top and not loose to Russel on '22. If LH looses to russel in '22 then retires for '23 he will just look bad. LH is at the end of his prime and aging from 36 to 37 is much bigger on performance than 20 to 21.

The facts support my story. The greatest F1 driver of all time doesn't lose the WDC twice to two somewhat average drivers in identical equipment running inferior strategy.

Who, that is available, should Red Bull have signed for either 2020 or 2021?

Raikkonen - Retired, and though I love the guy, not what he used to be.
Ricciardo left on his own accord. Though I'm sure Red Bull would welcome him back with open arms, not at the price that Ricciardo can command, even IF Ricciardo wants to come back, which, with what seemed at the time of signing, a more likely number 1 deal in a good team.
Alonso - signed a huge deal with Alpine
Sainz - Max was beating him despite being vastly less experienced.
Leclerc - Signed by his dream team
Hamilton - signed and I have extreme doubts he'd actually want to drive alongside Max
Russell - Was already under a watertight Mercedes contract, that could almost certainly only be possibly be broken if Mercedes didn't sign him for 2022
Gasly - Unless he magically found a second in pace that he was in deficit to Verstappen...just more of the same.
Bottas - Well. Not really a guy anyone would consider to start beating Max.

Max is currently a ''career destroyer''. Any driver alongside him risks destroying his career, or indeed, legacy.

Doesn't RBR also promote from within, instead of outside their system. For someone to succeed at RBR, and as Max's teammate, they need to have that ruthless, killer instinct. If Albon had it, he would have been great, but he did not. Like Ricci, he is too nice a guy.

The same Max who's been beaten in the standings twice by the average Ricciardo?

Yes. Max was very young at the time, he only had 1 season of F1 under his belt and 1 season of F3. The moment Max ''flipped the switch'' of not blindly going for any overtake, it was game over for Ric. I'm a huge fan of Ric but it is what it is. Post Monaco 2018, I don't think Ricciardo beat him in a race since then and very rarely in quali.

    And Ricciardo average?

It will be interesting to see how much Bottas will fall back in the results next season and how much the car did for him compare to his natural skills.

He started in 2015 so that's not true.

As for Ricciardo, he suffered horrendous luck in 2018.

And he's not showing to be good as of this season, very poor tbh.

Bottas is proof that you don't need to be a Top 10 driver to finish in the Top 2 WDC.

    Providing you're in a Mercedes

    So far this year:

    Bottas - 7 podiums
    Perez - 2 podiums

Bottas tends to be closer to LH in qualy as well. Consistent. Not a bad fit at RedBull. Would not beat Max. Who on the list would. The point of Perez was Constructors and to be touch closer to Max. Bottas was more than competent at that with Mercedes.

The points table is telling me he did not start Monaco and that he was retired in Hungary, but is still leading. He finished ahead in 8 of 13 races so far. The narrow points lead only tells part of the story.

The Mercedes is a better car.
Bottas would be destroyed as Verstappen’s teammate.

10-3 in Qualy is a more interesting metric.
No one could really believe Carlos is a match for Charles.
