575 major service

I have my eye on 575m and I would like to know why is belt service so much more then other models, ie 355? Is this something that average mechanic can do meaning I did it on my 348 and 360…

 

It's a v12. It has more stuff that needs to be removed to get the job done. Forget about lock and swap, v12 Ferraris are super sensitive to cam timing and you need to do that religiously. Having said that, if you have done your 348 and 355 timing belt job yourself, you can probably handle this one too.

 

Is that possible? I thought the 355 was an engine out belt service so it would be surprising to me that it would be less expensive than a Maranello?

A successful lock and swap on the 575M will be more readily achievable than on an earlier V12 (550, 456 etc) as the 575M camshaft seals can be replaced (if needed) *without* pulling the camshafts (something that would certainly require the timing to be reset from first principles).

550/575 belt service is considerably cheaper (and easier) than 348-360 since it's literally right up front.

Pop off airboxes, accessory belt, cam covers and you're at the belts.

 

Equal comparison should be about the same or maybe a little less for the Maranello. Lock and swap is lower for the 550/575 compared to a lock and swap for a 348/355. Full service including tensioners, timing, and while there work should be about the same. The engine out cost for the 348/355 is a lot more than the marginal cost difference for a few V12 parts.

 

See what another mechanic quotes you. I still do all my work on 550's and did so on 348/355/360. I have not done 575 but would not expect any gotchas. After a while you can predict how Ferrari would do stuff. Each model has it's own quirks to get the job done. When I do majors I send out the injectors to be cleaned and blue printed. I can't remember the cost around $25-50 bucks x 12 so that's already 300-600 bucks. Just the parts costs add up pretty quick.

 

Unless the injectors service is particular to the V12s, the delta using those rates would be $100-$200 but you still have to account for the engine out cost, no?

 

12 cyl to 12 cyl Ferrari, a major including belts on my 575 and previous 550 is significantly less than on my engine out F512M.

 

I'm DIY not a flat rater professional. So I just see it as time and I take whater time I need and never count how long. Yeah the V12 the motor does not come out but have you ever had to reach into a V12 engine bay for a while? Your back can only take so much. I even lift the car up on my lift so I don't lean over as much. The engine out platforms I can time cams replace waterpump etc. much faster because everything is right in front of me in easy reach. Try taking a V12 plenum off you need 2 people because it is akward and heavy. Then you have to work slower on v12s because there is paint everywhere too. You can't scratch a car when the engine is on a stand.

 

From the places I’ve asked the cost equal or greater then 348/355. How many hours is belt change

 

No it is not as expensive as 348/F355. Mine has had multiple belt changes (owned since 2008) and they cost nowhere near what it does when you have to remove the engine.

 

Average price I have been quoted is $6000

When I researched having a Major done on my 550 here in New England, I received quotes between $4800-$11,500.

 

A lot of opinions on what a major service should cost. In reality, it varies widely depending on where you live and who's doing the work, as we know.

Living in or near a larger city or more populated area, one probably has several options of Ferrari or exotic car repair shops from which to choose. In a smaller town or more rural area, probably not so much. If there's one guy who's competent to work on these cars, and who's reasonably close by, you're lucky. Otherwise, you tow or ship the car maybe several hundred miles (or more) to a shop location. Or you DIY.

So, for many of us, cost is a "is what it is" proposition. I'm not inclined to DIY (other than very basic stuff, plus I want a paper trail of professional maintenance and repairs to go with my car) or tow my 550 hundreds of miles (or pay up to a couple thousand to have it shipped) to/from a repair shop. Personally, as long as the repair guy is competent, within reason I really don't much care what it costs. I know that a cam belt change/major service ain't gonna be cheap regardless of who does it, mid- or front-engine, and there's often gonna be some "while you're in there" add-ons to the bill.

These are Ferraris, after all, and V-12 Ferraris at that. Nobody said they'd be cheap to own.

 

One of us would have to check that Grigio Maranello on BaT that sold in the last year I think in Oklahoma and I had looked hard at all his invoices from his European specialist and the pricing was comically inexpensive (maybe $75 an hour).

I live in NorCal and the little guy in the Santa Cruz mountains I take my diesel tow rig to even charges $150 and hour.

My Ferrari mechanic in San Jose keeps promising the car will be done soon and when it is I’ll be interested to see what the belt charge line item comes in at. I’m hoping it is reasonable since he has a gargantuan backlog of work.

 

You know, you drive a 12 cylinder Ferrari, you take it in for a 5 year major to include timing belts and all the usual suspect, you get a quote for $6,000. That is par for the course.

A Lexus dealer once quoted me $8,000 for shocks, CV joints, TPMS, and tires. That was ridiculous for a car worth $5K.

 

Roselli is famous for a gargantuan backlog....

 

Nobody ever promised you that owning a Ferrari, any Ferrari, is going to be cheap...
Try Honda for cheap ownership. The line is shorter overthere.

 

The line isn’t necessarily shorter….;-) we just throw those Honda’s away cause they don’t have the soul or magic of a Ferrari ;-)

 

I shouldn’t defend Roselli but….in his defense the paint guy has been ridiculous and being a nice guy goes a long way with me for sure. My car has been with him so long it feels like I sold it 8-(

 

It does not matter what the quote is because Ferrari does not list the definition of a major service. There is a famous turd polisher in SoCal that does a belt swap and calls that major. The only way to compare "majors", is to get an exact list of every service provided. And the owner needs to be smart enough to know something about cars when he reads the line item. For example, injectors cleaning while still inside the car is not the same as injectors pulled out and properly serviced cleaned and sometimes blue printed or "flow matched." Most completely ignore any kind of injector service.

 

FBB- Affirmative, there is no major service for the Maranellos, just a bunch of services at time intervals. The five year belt changes are usually matched up with other fluid, belt and filter changes and sometimes an injector service "while you are in there".

Not quite the same as the Boxer service note "If for any reason you remove the engine, change the cambelts".
