Ferrari Monza SP1/SP2 book

Shipment of the highly exclusive official Monza SP1/SP2 book is scheduled to begin at 8th October. Time to start a discussion about it. Did anyone pre-order it already? Any views whether it will become a highly sought-after collectors' item? They make 499 of them at a breathtaking price. Any opinion?

Haven't seen the Taschen book in real, but I think the Monza book will be much better.

 

Hopefully for the purchasers it's better, but I doubt. Both Opus and Taschen are nothing special other than being huge and heavy, and being packed in a nice container (Taschen). Mark my words, the Monza book is likely to be a glorified sales brochure!

 

I made a similar statement about the official factory book "La Nuova Dolce Vita - Ferrari Roma" that I felt was a glorified brochure on the Ferrari Roma.

Since Ferrari produce hardcover brochures for all their new models I remember having a discussion with Marcel about the true definition of a sales brochure as opposed to a hardcover book.

Personally the two factors for me are the content of the book and if there is any objectivity to the model (mentioning both the cons as well as the pros of the car) and who it's actually been written by (most brochures don't have a credited author).

I think the Monza SP1/2 book is an expensive "brochure" for the model in a similar way McLaren made a very expensive hardcover brochure (not the Driving Ambition book) for the F1 road car.

I would like to get Karel Steiner also known as Terzeus1 for his opinion on whether he thinks it's a book or brochure.

I'm surprised Ferrari are not supplying a copy with each of the Monza's they have sold to the owner considering the asking price of the car.

Or perhaps they have/ are giving them another "owners" version of this book and they thought they could make a cool $2 million extra making a second general version selling it to the public.

I don't think it is quite in the same league, hype and fanfare as an Opus or Taschen but at $4,000 the price is certainly up there.

 

Mine is on pre order. It is numbered, has relatively low numbers produced, signed, carbon fiber, special inks/paper, etc. It looks fantastic.

IMO, definitely will be collector's item

 

I’d be very surprised if these all sold out.

With 499 being printed, covering only one model and at a cost of over $4,000 I think they’ll have trouble shifting them all.

The Tachen book is still available for sale from the publisher and that’s after 4 or so years later.

 

I agree with everything what has been said about TASCHEN. Although I haven't seen the book in real, from what I saw in previews and posts, it appears to be just large, but not premium as far as photography and production is concerned. We don't have to talk about Opus or teNEUES. All the same ...

As far as the Monza book is concerned, it wouldn't bother me if it were a "glorifying brochure". Why not? If it is produced with precious material, contains fabulous images and provides entertaining reading, it would be OK for me. Isn't the Miura book by Kidston glorifying as well?

At the moment, I just have my doubts whether it will turn out to be much a sought-after collectors' item with 499 copies at a price of 3.600 euros each. Well, if it is an enjoyable book, then the reader doesn't have to bother whether it is rare or not. But one day, the moment comes when you sell it and then it would be nice if the book fulfilled Ferrari law that each car (and book) one day surpasses its original value.

 

There is very little text, it is mainly a photo book. Pix are of average quality, nothing really special.

I haven't read the Monza book but from the description on the website it is nothing much like the Miura book.

The Monza book is described as a "celebration" of the model.

Reading between the lines it's a book written by a company, on a company product, singing it's own praises.

That's nothing like the Miura Book.

And the price, the Miura Book was originally around 550 UK Pound for both books. This thing is over 3,000 UK Pound !!!

It is almost never the case that any of these kind of objects, with a super-inflated price, marketed as collectors' items ever truly are. There will always be a few people that must have them but all the money has already been taken by the original seller (in this case Ferrari). If you have the money and want it then go ahead and enjoy it for what it is. But you won't be paying for years of unique research or stunning unpublished images. Nor will you be paying for any kind of warts and all text. Call me cynical, but this book exists purely as something to add some more to the bottom line. And don't expect to sell it for a hefty profit in 10 years time either.

The books aren't even individually numbered, they are all marked as 001/499 on the front cover.

It just keeps getting worse I'm afraid.

 

Quite right! This is just vanity, nothing to do with publishing a book of interest. But then, who wants/needs a car that weighs 2 tons with a 1000bhp engine. It's the bling, bling celebrity body builder mentality.

Thank you in advance for addressing Mr. Mark. Unfortunately, I am not a specialist in such books. Mr. Marcel Massini is right that it is more of a photo book. I think the price is too high even though the book is made of Exclusive materials. Personally, I would not buy such a high amount for which the book is offered, even if I had not bought the money for it. I don't think they all sell either. Take a look at the LaFerrari Book, which only the owners received and the price goes down. I bought it for about a fee of $ 1,100 from Canada. Some owners and dealers sell it for $ 2,500 to $ 3,500.

Ps: It's just my private opinion.

 

The description on the
Ferrari store website makes the book sound like interesting reading and viewing :

: "Unpublished pictures and exclusive texts reveal never-before-seen details about the car with a story all its own. It also features anecdotes about its design, production and road debut, and retraces Ferrari’s entire history, from the first races in the 1950s to the drivers who took the most exciting victories" but I suppose we will have to review the real book to be sure

Rosey may be right about the numbers- it doesn't actually say each book is individually numbered, just limited (which would be lame). It does make a point about the book being personally signed with the signatures, hope there is no funny business with that.

I haven't ordered one so we will need to rely on you and others to tell us in detail what it's content is like.

The numbering system is certainly disappointing not that I expect Ferrari to be dishonest with them but it's nice to have a unique book number, especially
at that price.

The other issue I have with it is the size. I have quite a few larger Ferrari books like Opus and others that just don't fit on my shelves and are packed away in boxes.

As a result, I just don't refer or view them as much.
