I have a regular 400k trip to my elderly parents in the central west..it takes 5 hours now and there are no charging facilities on the farm, yes there is electricity but 240v 10 amps takes how long to charge?..With the Diesel it’s there and back one tank, just.

Hydrogen is far more promising than pure plug in. Electric cars should be mandatory for the future of cities, and even then the distances some people drive work in cities like Sydney and I would imagine Melbourne you need to be able to charge at work.. infrastructure for this?..
I have not watched one electric car video that doesn’t talk about range anxiety, even in Europe, to me electric cars as they are are overhyped shopping carts..

If any of what you're saying is true, which I doubt, then an electric car is not for you.

However, the fast majority of people never leave town, and electric is the perfect solution. Drive during the day. Plug in at home overnight. Just like with a phone. Never go to a petrol station again.

If I only had one car, it would definitely be electric. If I had to do a long distance drive, i'd hire a car. That would have happened once in the last three years.

I don't agree with you regarding hydrogen, but unlike you I remain open minded.

I’ve driven over 1000km in a day more times than I can count.
    Not non-stop, of course.
But even the 5-10min to refuel and grab a quick bite is annoying when you have that far to travel, let alone however long it would take to recharge an electric car.

Hydrogen is no solution. Too much energy lost to separate it either from natural gas or water, too many issues with storing it (embrittlement), too many safety issues with handling it. Right now the promotion campaign comes from yet another unholy alliance of vested interests - the natural gas industry and rent-seeking environmentalists.

Electric cars are a WOFTAM idea too, like solar panels and wind farms, none of them would exist with taxpayer subsidies. VW built a 1 litre per 100km car 20 years ago, imagine if we'd spent as much money in that direction as has been fed into the green-left religious hysteria?

You are completely ignoring how great they are to drive as a daily and the convenience of never going to a petrol station.

    That's ok.... Most people do.

It's why I still have a hand cranked washing machine. I hate tech

Hydrogen can be transported as ammonia NH3,
The other more significant issue for all the greenies is what to do with the low grade radioactive isotope that is a by product of mining the rare earth material to make the electric motors. Is there a tax to cover the environmental issues when dealing with that, there should be, added to price of things that use the stuff.... Good bey Tesla, Its China's problem at the moment ( CCP doesnt give S#it) as the Yaks recon its to dangerous to process after it destroyed a whole wilderness area.
Finally there not enough of it on the planet to replace every car let alone every other piece of equipment.

Because there's no clear answer. It varies from car to car and charger to charger. From hours to 30 mins for 100s of km. A snack and you're ready to go under some circumstances.

However, I still don't know that I'd want to take an electric car for a very long drive into the wilderness. Melbourne Sydney Brisbane no worries

Boss’ Tesla 3 is daily driver and gets plugged in Wed nights and sometime on the weekend. He lives out bush on a dirt road but has solar panels at home. No issue on a day trip to Bne (around 300k all up). He doesn’t have any ‘range anxiety’ because he inputs his itinerary and the dash tells him how much charge he needs for the trip and a warning if there’s insufficient available. Guess if he had to make an unplanned long distance run he might be in strife, but if you’ve ever needed fuel in Noosa Junction after 7pm you’d know how that feels!

Fine but THAT wasn't the question and PP didn't quite answer it as well as he could.

You are going on a long Graeme type daytime trip (he being the protagonist of this particular subject) say up to 1000klms in a 12 hour day.
Relative to the brand of EV how long does it take to recharge say your boss's 3?

If as PP says anywhere FROM 30 mins to hours, how long will it take you to complete that 1K trip.....24 hours?...I don't know hence the original question.

Simon, I don't think the infrastructure is suitable for electric cars to do long distance travel in Australia.

Suffice to say, however, if you drive a Tesla to Sydney from Melbourne you'd stop once for lunch and by the time you finished the car would be charged. I don't believe it would make the trip any longer unless the plan was not to stop for a meal and a stretch.

I'm not sure you could do that with other brands ATM
