So the car has a reproduction body and non-original motor, and comes with the original engine separate from the car? I'm not sure if I'm making heads or tails of this.

Yeah...I'm no expert but that body looks wrong in so many ways.

Well, BaT comments saying it's going to go well into 7 figures. Only @Marcel Massini can comment on provenance but it appears to be significant and noteworthy. I sure like the looks of it.

BaT commenters tend to have no idea about Ferrari values.

Ive looked at this car on their (Fantasy Junction) site. Its interesting. The body is a reproduction, the rear axle is a reproduction, the engine is a reproduction. Curious to see what it goes for.

Can we assume that the chassis is original, anything else?

    My read on it is pretty straightforward;

The one historical incident is that in the late 1950's a Swedish owner had a fiberglass body made and at that time the original body was separated from the car.
Fast forward to the modern era and Bachelli & Villa in Italy were commissioned to make a replacement body to replicate the original. I have never visited their shop because you can't drive there from where I live, but Bachelli & Villa come highly recommended by a guy called Massini. :D

Because the present life of the car involved vintage racing, the owner commissioned a replacement engine to race with. The original engine remains united with the car and is included in the sale.
Further, during restoration work (because racing was the objective), the transaxle and gas tank had replacements made and installed. The original transaxle and gas tank remain and are included in the sale.

SO, what are you buying? According to the ad, the whole original car with the exception of the original bodywork.
You get a spare engine, transaxle, and gas tank to race with.
The original engine, transaxle, and gas tank are included with the car in the sale.

Excellent points. I saw that the original engine was included, which is obviously huge. I missed some of the rest of that. I think its lovely.

Thanks for the clarification Dave. I wish all the best to the owner but have my doubts that it will sell on BaT. A four cylinder Ferrari is not something purchased on a whim. The buyer often is seeking an entry level Ferrari or Maserati sports racer that is eligible for the Mille Miglia. Any serious player for this car already knows about it. My 2 cents.

I agree four cylinder Ferrari are hard to sell at the moment and there are quite a few on the market.
Here is a similar one (0418MD) with its late owner in a past Mille Miglia edition along with a 225S.

Nevertheless, brings a very large audience to see the advertising, ala ebay: not so much to really sell there as to advertise

Yeah, the guy who bowed out from the auction for the CGT to bid on this Mondial should have bought the CGT.

The wrong venue. The disappointing result will be a stain on this car, not a smart move IMO.

    The long way home
I stated the same repeatedly. Sellers need to be more cognizant of the limitations of the chosen sale venue and the resultant fallout from a poor choice.

0408MD did not participate in Mille Miglia 1954. Tore Bjurström wanted his car to be delivered well a head of the race in Helsinki in pristine condition, as he and his customer had the world premiere for an entirely new Ferrari model in their hands and would not miss it for the world!

The five first Pinin Farina spiders that were completed in time were all quite different so identifying the Mille Miglia cars really isn't that difficult. The one missing in all those photos is 0408MD.

Perhaps a fair price per cubic displacement?
