Will someone please explain to me the logic behind these new pit stop rules? I don't get it.

This is totally correct. For the handful of times it would be necessary, I wonder if keeping a former driver on retainer would be worth the fee. The dulcet tones of, say, Jenson Button on the radio advising the best call, might have saved 21 points and garnered a first win for someone today.

The logic was to increase the penalty for bad pitstops.
IN practice, it has simply made more pitstops bad.

That's harsh Bob, I was calling for him to stay out like Rubinho did many years ago for Ferrari when it started to rain .... of course there was only a few laps left then unlike today and I don't think Lando is as good in the rain as some others but yes, I think even the best rainmaster, Schuey, would have made a quick stop :)

Germany 2000. Raining on part of the track. RB wanted to come in and was told to stay out and thus won his first GP.

MB whined about how quickly RB stops were going and thus the FIA quickly intervened on safety grounds, thus sparing the RB pit crew from the carnage that was no doubt going to result.

I think that the FIA should make it mandatory that pit stops last at least 30 seconds so the driver can get some hydration, the pit crew doesn’t need to rush about so much and therefore avoid bodily harm, and maybe the drivers can give a quick interview about what it’s like out there.;)

Lando would be called a genius if he had won.

Pity LH didn't stay out like he wanted to. That would have been epic.

Its not harsh. Its fact. They have all the weather radar. The team can tell what the next 5 minutes of weather will be like. That's why they have all that stuff. Ignoring it costed him a victory and gave it to Hamilton.

They called him in more than once. He said no, Hamilton said OK. Who won?

How much money did McLaren lose by ignoring what the team told him to do? How many teammates are upset because he didn't do what the team told him? He had this race in his hands and let Hamilton steal it.

The McLaren team and Norris himself, lost the race because of unlucky decisions. Norris's desire to stay out became a mistake when the rain became a monsoon. Easy to second guess, tried to pit two laps too late and that's the way the breaks went. Could the team leadership been more insistant? Sure, but they had the same stardust in their eyes that Norris had in his...it was so close...until then it wasn't.

Hamilton and Mercedes got the lucky end of the rain. But even before the rain, Hamilton was driving very well. It would have been fun to see a dry finish and if Norris could hold him off.

Max drove a superb race and did everything he had to do...and even more. Yes, this could be his year.

Sainz earned his podium and I think it shows a better future for Ferrari is now coming. It was good to see a red driver's suit up there. I thought it was a great race.

How did Max get the jump to P2 when he changed to Inters? Were they faster in the pits, or did he pass the other cars? He was 5th or 6th before the rain, and then he's in P2.

Hamilton ignored for at least one more lap until he heard that Max pitted.

Norris was in a very difficult position to pit. Had he pitted before Lewis and the weather stayed as it was (indecisive), he could've lost the race that way. Had he pitted directly after Lewis, he'd have lost the race regardless.

This is motorracing. Norris isn't in the title fight. This was a race for glory or nothing.

A fine? So each time Mclaren messes up, Norris can fine them or something?

It was utter chaos in the couple of laps with the rain and pitstops. I think Max jumped a few drivers on the lap into the pit, and took a few more after). We couldn't see much as the cameras where showing fight for P1. Hope the onboards get released today.

It's quite simple really...Red Bull had a system in place that, based on the torque going through the wheel guns etc, the system knew if the wheel nut was on correctly or not. Since implementing that system several years ago, Red Bull has had the safest but also the fastest pitstops.

Mercedes doesn't have this system, so lobbied the FIA to get the system banned....on safety grounds. FIA agreed.

I think it is a great idea. And let’s face it: it is easy to forget that the drivers, too, feel pressure when on any given day they’re whizzing about going the thick end of 200mph and chatting as you or I might while cruising around town at 25mph.

I think for McLaren this is a growing pain. They’ll sort it. And Lando has shown us that he moves on quickly (think Spa -> Zandvoort). He’ll just he that bit more hungry.

The first win is always the hardest, it seems.

Sorry Pedro, but I do tend to agree with Subirg; perhaps not in the same proportion, but I do think Leclerc is "somewhat"overrated; and Sainz has been sowewhat "underrated" (including by myself), and this is apparent now. He might be spanish, but he is no slouch. Leclerc might be fast (from time to time), but he has achieved very little up to now. This year, as the ponts show, Sainz results are better, that's all.

I know you're a very "practical" person...but you also know that results differ from what drivers do on track, and Carlos (i agree, he's a good driver and a solid one) as been slower all year long, both on Saturdays and Sundays. Apart from France he was always beaten by Charles "fair and square" wich is ok, no one was expecting him to even come close. What i know is were Charles started and that they were together before Ferrari Pitted Carlos (again a fair decision cause he was in front) and left Charles out (i think they decided to try both options, wich is understandable). Charles is a diferent breed, a true racer, with a raw speed that carlos will never have, this reminds me of Mika and Coulthard, when they first drove together for Mclaren, they were very similar, the moment the car was a front runner, D.C never saw Mika again, i believe this is what will happen if Ferrari makes a championship contender.

How did Leclerc's new PU do against Max's time???

    Note:
Max pitted on Lap 26, Charles on Lap 35.

Charles was P13 and had to clear Vettel, Raikkonen, Ocon, Stroll and Russell from Lap 37-44, Max was in clear air.

Rain hit the track from Lap 45, and both Max and Sainz pitted for intermediates on Lap 48.
