Correct period screws for 1960's Maserati

Hoping someone can confirm or otherwise if phillips head screws were ever used on 1960's Italian cars, I've been doing some googling & General Motors were using phillips head screws in the the late 30's, however I can't find if Maserati used them.

I'm preparing my fully restored '67 Sebring Series II for a concours & one of my good friends who is also a judge at numerous events here in Australia, says only straight slot head screws were used on Italian cars back in the '60's, not phillips head which my car has a quantity of phillips head that were used during the restoration.

My friend says you can be marked down for non original type screws, if in period they were straight slot head vs phillips.

 

If it helps my 67 Ghibli, which my father acquired in 1970, has Phillips head screws throughout the interior. They are used through a cuppped washer and black colour to match the interior. I have no reason to believe that these would have ever been changed out. Cheers

Thanks but I’m not sure what you’re suggesting with this, I’m looking for what were the original type screws installed by the factory in the 60’s.

 

@psw - I think the idea there is that there are a wide varity of fittings there to pick and choose from, they nearly always have something that will work. Keen to hear what you learn from Maserati.

 

Thanks for all the comments so far, my car has a mix of straight head & phillips head, here are some photos where there is a difference, my real quandary is whether the phillips head are what would have been used by the factory originally, I'm maybe being too pedantic but my friend seems to think only straight slot were used.

It's very hard to find cars of the 60's that are totally original to compare or haven't been restored, most modern restorations would use phillips head given the ease of tightening these as opposed to straight slot.

See attached a sampling of photos from my car showing phillips & slot head, I'm concerned the phillips used should perhaps be slot head & need changing out for concours originality concerns? There are a lot of trim screws that are phillips & from Heymj73's comments above this may well have been factory original to use phillips. Hopefully Fabio will confirm either way.

The restoration is magnificent see last photo, however these little things in a concours can cause point deductions.

Funnily, I ask myself the same question because I'm currently rebuilding a 68 Mexico and I try to make things correct. To answer to your first question, I could say that 60's Maserati used both of them. I spot that many of your screws are new. Altissimo indicators are OK but Cibié left the french factory slotted. Bomoro latches are philips on my car but I think it's wrong. Please note that I have seen QP1 and many Mexico with slotted version !!! All yours screws are flat heads (modern type, original were domed). Deflectors button is philips but domed. About trim, I would say philips domed with cup washers. Don't forget that Maserati were built at different places so we can't make a general rule. Good luck!

Thanks wilde for your comments & insights as well, I think as you say there are many screws that are new & potentially are not correct, being flat & not domes, interestingly Heymj73 makes mention of his Father's old Ghibli having period phillips for the interior trim, thanks to his comments again also.

I'll wait to hear from Fabio for hopefully a definitive answer & then subject to his advice I'll probably change out some of the phillips where I believe they should have been domed slotted & leave most of the interior trim as phillips.

There is a difference in the fasteners among the Ghibli built by Ghia which is all phillips in the interior, compared to the Mexico and Sebring built by Vignale where it is mostly slotted strews. I have restored two original Sebring series 1 and a 67 Mexico and the interior screws used for panels etc. are domed slotted with finisher. The door hardware uses a large sized phillips as an exception. The best source for the exact screw type and metric size is Newco Products. They match exactly to the original and are stainless steel which can polish up to look like chrome. The owner Neil Mangia started the company around sourcing the correct ferrari fasteners for his GTC restoration

Well I heard back from Fabio, he confirmed straight slotted screws were correct, he was not specific about any exceptions & just stated phillips head not correct, it is interesting from comments here there are few definite exceptions ie door hardware.

I'm going to change out all phillips head & potentially just leave some of the door hardware with recessed phillips head as mentioned by lussoman above. Thanks for all the input.
