It's only a matter of time before the other car companies get into the cheap speed business.

What then is the value of a Ferrari? Is it just a brand name, like Gucci? Or is it about some history or legacy that won't even be relevant in a few years?

And then there's my home state. CA will be banning the sale of ALL petrol cars in 2030 (they've already banned them in 2035). That means Ferrari will have to compete head to head in the electric market. But making EVs fast is REALLY easy. And cheap.

On top of all that, now Ferrari are making SUVs.

Will the Ferrari brand be reduced to expensive handbag status in the coming decade? What real value proposition can they present to a customer when being super fast is also super cheap?

I am not sure if this is serious or not.
You do realize cars are more then all out speed, right?
If it was just about the fastest stoplight to stoplight, there would be no market for vintage/classic cars as a lighted used tesla/GTR/Vette would be an easy pick.

And that has nothing to do with 'expensive handbag status'... the driving experiences are quite varied and different then your usual appliance.

set a new fastest lap around the nurburgring....then come and talk to me.

if automotive credibility were only linked to 0-60 or 0-100 mph times, then ferrari would have lost the fight years ago.

Can a Mod merge this with any of the other "Tesla smokes everything else off the line" threads?
Maybe even merge them all into one, since they seem to keep popping up?

Great post and I think many people have stuck their heads in the sand about the speed of electrical (environment be damned). Too many people got their undergarments in a twist due to personal bias. I've said many times, 1/4 mile, speed traps, lap records, don't care about politics.

Lap Times and records don't have feelings or generate CO2.

To answer your question, Ferrari is making an all-electric car in 2025. I wasn't around, but I'm sure many people, some folks, were angry when we transitioned from electric to steam to ICE and now back to electric. I'm sure hippophiles to this day shake their fists at our "iron horses.

People like to whinge. I think folks need to get over it. *IF* they ban our classic cars from the road, then I'll pick up my pitchfork and join them.
Ferrari always had an element of speed. That said, we've entered the realm way beyond any reasonable rate at a normal stoplight. Doing 8 sec 1/4 miles in a populated area is like shooting off a gun. We'll continue to have speed wars forever. I guarantee it. Motor nerds will simply obsess about the hundredths, hell thousandths of second just like Formula 1.
"Yeah? The Ferrari 3000XX does 1/4 mile in 5.326 seconds?" Well, the New Mclaren 800GTR-XZ does it in 5.312 seconds"....
    Rinse repeat.
Hell, say in the year 2100 - substitute those numbers with 3.342 and 3.335 (electronically limited of course to certain areas)
Ferrari has to stay competitive, hence 2025. To your point, NYSE: RACE doesn't have to be the "fastest" (especially when that title changes yearly) but they have to at least be in the neighborhood. I'm not one of those that believe they need to move to a different city made for retirees. That's what their grand tourer cars are for.

Apologies. I searched "plaid" and came up empty. If I'd known of the other threads, I would have posted there.

The Plaid is on a whole new level though.

You wouldn't buy a car made with 1960s tech brand new TODAY. You're essentially making my point, that Ferrari's value may be a thing of the past. Ferrari has to compete in the here and now to sell cars and stay afloat. What value does a new Ferrari have besides its name brand if vastly cheaper cars can perform on the same level?

Not talking about just Tesla. As I said, a bunch of car makers are getting into the cheap speed space. You will start seeing electric sports cars made by other companies that are performance oriented. And cheap. What will Ferrari do then?

More than likely, the next phase of Batterymobiles will be the safety speed issue with new regulations on how you are allowed to build a Batterymobile. Then you will see some 'dumbed down' cars that can only top out at xx speed. But if you want to go Ferrari/Lamborghini fast, well then you are definitely going to pay for that exclusivity.

The vintage car conversion market, that's going to be the one to watch.

It's not just off the line, they are steadily hitting track records too.

I respect some folks who feel Ferrari should no longer be competitive when it comes to speed. I simply disagree.

Yeah, Throttle House talked about this during their review. The Plaid is a DANGEROUS car. Way too fast for it's crossover shape and the brakes are useless.

When you can manufacture a 200mph car for 50 grand, the regulators are going to step in. We'll see some crashes first, then a twitter uproar, then the politicians will start talking about how cars in general are dangerous, then it will become political as the reactionaries claim that slowing down electric cars is communist, but in the end the laws will end up on the books because the nanny state always wins. Everywhere, not just here.

Well, considering 2025, Rimac/Bugatti, Evija, Koenigsegg, are around the corner - those safety speed issue regulations need to come sooner rather than later. I do find it ironic though that some in the Ferrari crowd (not specifically you) are concerned about going 'too fast.'

I would dare say Enzo would spin in his grave.

A lot of folks are still super far behind the eight ball...

Nothing wrong with this. As I said, if the powers that be ban my vintage cars, then I'll bust out my torches and tell me where the march is?
Otherwise, I look into the future with my eyes wide open than my head in the sand.

Don't worry, though; this is why Ferrari is making an all-electric car. Thankfully the board at Ferrari agrees with you and me that Ferrari should still be competitive when it comes to speed.

I don't understand the counterargument; if Ferrari were to relinquish at least being near the top of speed, then the proverbial 'fancy handbag' moniker is truly here. Never mind, Rolls Royce and Bently have a lock-in in that department.

Most people here probably don't know Enzo would have been the first to adopt electricity; he would be the first to focus on SPEED. Piero said this on tape, way before electrification came into vouge. Enzo always said the 'best Ferrari' is the 'next one.' What can I say? I believe in that ethos.

This doesn't really address the question, which was asked honestly by someone who loves Ferrari cars: what is the future of the Ferrari brand if performance is no longer a factor?

    It's a fair ask.

I mean, I guess Ferrari can change their ticker symbol from "RACE" to "BAG"
Leave F1 and fully focus on their fashion shows instead.
Instead of having fast cars, shift their priority to aesthetic beauty.

I respect your view that this should be Ferrari's future, I hope you respect that I disagree.

Take the whole electric part out of the equation, a Dodge Demon is quicker than basically every Ferrari also. It didn't do much do hurt Ferrari sales though.

That being said, when Ferrari makes an electric car, presumably it will be in the same straight line speed realm as every Tesla. It'll look different, handle differently, have real leather, and so on.

Can you imagine the Ferrari handbag...one litre volume when new, then 600cc a few years later, then 200cc and useless because it won't hold lip gloss and a condom at the same time. Purse snatchers won't even target them cuz they are stuck to their owner.

In point of fact, Enzo never wanted to make road cars at all. He did it to finance his racing program. He DESPISED most of his wealthy clientele and this if fairly well documented.

I think what I'm on about is the 50k car that gets 60 in 1.8 seconds and runs to 200mph. That car is VERY doable with the tech on hand right now. Much less in 10 years when battery tech will be even stronger. The Plaid is a crossover. But it would be very easy for a big box car manufacturer to scale it into a little roadster and sell it for just over cost.

When that happens, and it will, what will Ferrari have to offer?

The enjoyment of 0-60 on the street ended in the 3/4 seconds. Faster is far too dangerous on city streets. Heck even 3-4 seconds is too dangerous considering how awful most pavement is.

We jumped the performance shark over a decade ago.

I consider modern performance like the guy addicted to online porn constantly searching for the girl who is just incrementally more attractive to jerk off to. It went from fun to being a mental/emotional illness.

Apparently Elon begs to differ. He's projecting the Tesla Roadster to get near 1.8 seconds.

But Tesla's not even who I'm talking about. I'm talking about Ford and Chevy. If there's a market for cheap speed, you KNOW they're gonna get into it. And a 200mph Camaro that sells for a $39k base price is a legitimate threat to Ferrari.

    I'm sorry, but it is.

When Mercedes fans post comments about their latest bashing of Ferrari in our F1 forms, I relish it. The competition is good. Yes, we have not won an F1 championship in over 12 years. However, I'm the type of person that prefers to acknowledge shortcomings rather than bury them. Otherwise, how do you get better and WIN?

I mean, I guess Ferrari can change from being fast/pretty to just being pretty.
