Does anyone know what the fine white grit could be throughout
engine compartment after driving for an hour? Feels like very fine sand.

Could be your headers failing and blowing heat shield material around ..very common in the f430 ..do you know if there were replaced ?

Insulation from factory headers or exhaust. They use a white insulation that disintegrates with time. Just brush it away or replace muffler/headers with aftermarket.

Thanks for the quick feedback. This is a 2008 F430 with 10k miles. I’m told that 2008 and 2009 didn’t have the header problem. I just had the car fully serviced but will inquire about muffler and catalytic converter.

The silencer box has white insulation and then a stainless covering, it starts to breakup and comes out as dust. The later cars still have manifold problems caused by the expansion being constrained. The Capristo expansion brackets help a lot.

This. I’m sure you have a crack somewhere on the muffler. Likely at the seam.

The cats are also insulated with the white stuff, and a sheet metal on top; you can see it at the temp sensor flange. check cats too.

I did some thorough investigation using cameras. My problem was seeing white smoke/dust under hard accelerating inside the engine bay. It turned out to be the white powder coming out of the muffler pipe connections. Not harmful at all, just annoying. After a good hard track session it's usually gone for a few 1000miles. But comes back at some point.

Myself and a couple others had the muffler outlet pipes welded shut. Keeps the white powder in and was only $100.

Thanks. Would a header issue manifest as fine white grit? Sounds more like the silencer insulation. How do you check? Is a new OEM silencer recommended or aftermarket or nothing?

I your headers have a cracked then the exhaust coming out of the crack could break down the insulation closest to the crack and eventually come out from under the shield. Look at your undertray from above, is the white powder settling below the headers or under the muffler?

The white brick very fine sand is all over the engine compartment even on the left and right aprons and some on the back window ledge. It blows off easily with a air hose. But doesn’t appear to be collecting in any one spot.

My factory 360 muffler box was putting out white dust after I purchased my car from a collector. It had sat up for a couple years.

After 1 yr of driving weekly it stopped puking powder.

just an fyi… it might go away like mine did.

Jrosenthal, when I was searching about this a few months ago, this thread below was super helpful. At the time, the youtube link in the first post showed the white powder coming out when revving the engine (like in the picture), but alas it's been changed to "private" now. The Aldous Voice link in that thread is great too.
