That was completely F'd up. F1 is dead. The rules are applied whatever whoever wants it to be. Max did not win this race. It was given to him. The season should not have ended this way. There's a stain in it. Aside from the idiotic decisions after the last crash, why didn't Hamilton come in for tires when Max did? That's where the race was really lost. On the other hand, I'm happy for Honda. They were brutalized and came back to make an engine in a car as good as the best.
MB and LH should reflect on how they lost the WDC by focusing on non-F1 matters. Net positive for the sport that that behavior had consequences.
Reading all these comments here. I don't understand... Under virtual safety car, everyone had a chance to pit. Under safety car at the end, again, everyone had the same opportunity. The same rules applied for everyone. No exceptions. Red Bull decided to bring in Max and get the soft tires at the end. Didi he cheat in any way? I don't think so. Winning a championship is a team effort. Let's all move on already!!
Hamilton didn't put a foot wrong this weekend. Max drove better than Lewis the first half of season, Lewis drove better second half. This was basically the 4th race Hamilton outperformed Max in a row. Massi would not have broken the safety car rules during a regular season race, but decided to do it this race.
Congratulations to Max. I thought after the last race his chance to win the driver's championship was gone. Lewis had been stellar on the track. Nice to see Powered by Honda prevail this time. And with P1, 4 and 5 for this final race of the season.
Of course they will. That was the reason for having their attorney present, It’s tough because RBR didn’t screw Merc over…it was the RD and his season long struggle for consistency. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over and congrats to Max. Not the way you ever want to lose a title and certainly Lewis will feel done in by Masi, but there have been worse travesties in sports. Great battle all season, great start today and he really had the run of things only to be undone by a weird safety car situation.
Masi broke no rules. He had full discretion and authority to make the call, under 48.12 ... as well as 48.13, and 15.3 (which over-rides all other considerations).
Rick, special mention to you for consistently being the voice of reason between the rival fans on this forum.
Again, Max did nothing wrong. It was the uncertainty of the situation that was ‘Messy’. Had LH pitted, Max would have stayed out and there was a good chance the race would finish under yellow (Horner wouldn’t have pushed for a green start there). The only way that such a close title fight should have finished with a safety car was by red flagging it. It would have mitigated the risk of Hamilton pitting only to have Max again (remember Jeddah) stay out and he loses the lead without any opportunity to regain it. A forward thinking RD may have considered that. Masi is just reacting to all of the things going on.
I'm not the biggest Lewis rah-rah fan (I do admire his talent) but you have to give him credit the way he handled himself after the race. It must have eaten him up inside but he didn't do anything but show respect to the "winner". Not sure Max would have done the same if the tables were reversed.
The only thing good is that Toto lost. So I am happy. But I wish the race ended without the juggling of the rules. I would have preferred a clean race no matter who won.
Per Adrian newey : Red Bull had the faster car. His words post race. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
