Of course it was the right strategy! Relying on Lewis' racecraft was their only miscalculation. Perez proved that it is possible to defend against a car 2+ sec/lap faster on old tires, which exactly what Mercedes bet that Hamilton could do. Simply, Lewis failed to perform.

For the same reason, if Hamilton pitted and Max stayed out, there is no way Max would have allowed Lewis to pass him. Either Max would cross the line first, or neither would. We all, including the entire Mercedes team, know this to be true. That is the spirit of an F1 world champion driver.

Stewards account: Connelly insisting that lap cars stay in position behind safety car, leaving a barrier between Max and Lew. Horner radios Masi and asks why aren't the lapped cars going through. Masi tells him "give me a minute"...he then proceeds to tape duct Connelly's mouth shut and ties him to his chair. Masi then instructs the lapped cars to go through. :D:p:)

MB based their strategy on the written Sporting regs.

They expected Messy to direct 'any' lapped cars to pass Lewis and subsequently on the following lap to bring in the safety car .

Neither happened .So I can understand why MB are not exactly happy how it turned out.

So it comes down to "any" vs "all"?

They based their strategy on either the race finishing under yellow, a restart with 5 lapped cars between Max and Lewis, or Lewis being better than Max for one green lap (as Perez did to Lewis earlier). None of those things happened.

It is an undeniable fact that Lewis wins when he has the best car, and ONLY when he has the best car. (Unless his teammate beats him.) That is his track record.

I read on planetf1 that LH asked Toto/MB to withdraw their appeal. If true, kudos to him.

Connelly has a history of dislike to MV, should have never been officiating at this race.

Just to remind you that the spoiled brat looked like a ***** against perez's defending (w/ worn-out soft tyre compounds) which was another highlight of the race yesterday night

In the interim the British media is hard at work trying to cancel Masi.
Haven't landed their goto accusations yet but they're circling.

    Two questions I don't know:
1: Did Lewis not show up for the post race press conference? Does he get penalized or fined?
2: In the Steward decisions on the two MB protests, it said something like they forfeit their protest fee. Does that mean you have to pay a fee to file a protest?

2021 Sporting Regulations: "46) PODIUM CEREMONY AND POST EVENT PRESS CONFERENCE 46.1 The drivers finishing the race in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions and a representative of the winning constructor must attend the prize-giving ceremony on the podium and abide by the podium procedure set out in Appendix 3 (except Monaco); and immediately thereafter make themselves 2021 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations 49/89 16 December 2020 ©2020 Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile Issue 5 available for a period of one hour and 30 minutes for the purpose of television unilateral interviews and the press conference in the media centre."

Slightly off-topic but nevertheless useful in understanding how meaningless some of HAM’s 7 titles (and number of wins, etc.) are in light of how big a car advantage he had (has?). Still, he lost to Rosberg and now, with losing to Max, getting a decent teammate—even if he showed himself to already be a company man—and with a reset of the rules, hopefully his opportunities to sweep up wins and championships without opposition will be over.

:p I shamelessly stole this from another post:

Mercedes first made an V6 engine and then the rules were written to use that engine:

…then they willingly sandbagged during the hybrid era so that their ridiculous advantage was not clear, while engines are frozen and nobody could catch up:

… got a secret tyre test, so they had crucial early information about the tyres that no other competitor got:
Not to mention all the FIA assistance and turning a blind eye to his and his team’s infractions.

    +1, was thinking the same.

The team probably gave him a pacifier, but what did the FIA do?

Also, kind of in the "coulda, woulda, shoulda" category, the new layout in Abu Dhabi. Meant to increase passing, which overall it probably did, but I'd observe that the new turn 9 instead of the old hard braking chicane and two lefts meant LESS passing, even at the end of a DRS zone. Kind of comes down to are you passing due to DRS/drafting or passing in the braking zone. The big sweeper left of the new turn 9 didn't seem to have much braking going on.

He checked out of the race at the start. Wanted nothing to do with helping HAM and the team.

His radio communication after the finish and when told that Max won was pretty funny: an obviously forced “F***” and then just a few platitudes, LOL.

    That’s called RACING!

I don’t understand why you guys think it’s not ok to dive bomb. Obviously you can’t crash on the other car while doing so, but “if you don’t go for the gap, you are no longer a racing driver “.

For 2), even in karting you have to pay for filling a protest, which in turn is paid back if your appeal is accepted.

I didn't watch post-race stuff, but someone said Lewis had to be present for a protest and if that was during the post-race press conference that may explain his absence (if he was really absent from the conference).

Racing is not shoving aside your opponent with the threat of a crash. racing is being faster than the guy in front, and putting them in a position where they cant respond. A "dive bomb" is on the line and always dangerous. putting your fellow competitor in danger to me is un sportsman like. other sports like football, basketball etc have rules about hurting or potentially hurting other players... racing is just dangerous anyway, but allowing stupid banzi moves is not good. use of the Senna quote is way out of context in today's world ... and it was stupid when he said it.

Now do 'shoving your nose in on the inside of a 180mph corner and missing the apex'. Or is that just high speed dive-bombing? I'm so confused.

Yep, he was terrible against Perez wasn't he and if he hadn't had been held up that may have made a difference in the end, who knows.
