Again, if Mercedes has such an easy case to win and get 8th title with Lewis, why did they withdraw?

Dude, you are unwilling to accept facts. THE RULEBOOK allows the race director to change the safety car procedure. However, what matters is that whether or not allowing ALL cars or ANY cars to unlap themselves, it would still led to the same final situation: MAX WITH NEW TIRES RIGHT BEHIND LEWIS.

It doesn't matter if it was in the remaning seconds or not, everything was legal and fair. The fact is that Lewis lost because he was unlucky with the safety car AND because Mercedes had bet on maintaining track position.

Regardless of this specific discussion, Max overtake was a PIECE OF ART. Not sure if he thought that "Lewis thinks I will try to overtake him on the long straights, instead, I will surprise him right now and catch him with his pants down". That was genius! I still don't understand why Hamilton left the door open, he was either naive (which I don't believe) or was very nervous to think about defending. I have watched the race narration from 4 different channels, some of which have ex-driver as commentators, ALL OF THEM got surprised that Max lunged right there.

Take a look at all the stats, compare the team mates, Max was clearly superior to Lewis this year. A champion fair and square.

Because it would not overturn the race results anyway, even if they had won. Why waste any resources to go through the process. Masi got away with handing the championship to Max

    Awesome :)

Even the pro-Hamilton stewards, who did everything possible to gift the championship to Hamilton, recognize that 48.13 overrides 48.12. And, obviously, 15.3 overrides all.

What more needs to be said? The pro-Hamilton stewards recognize that NO rules were broken ... zero ... by anyone.

It was a fair fight, and Max Verstappen won :)

So....forever, basically, Ferrari is contractually awarded more of F1's income(might have the lingo wrong, but the intent is correct) than any other team. That's not 'fair'.

Interesting with all the focus on words and definitions, that you use the word "script" as if the race outcome had been previously decided that ham and Merc should triumph.

Many ham fans are disappointed with you, as they had become so accustomed to their hero acting out the script.

    Here's to more "off-script" racing in 2022.

Okay, so I'll play along. What was Masi's motivation to "break the rules" and "hand the WDC to Max." If there's a crime, there has to be a motive.

This is what pulls on the fibers of my brain. The LH fans crying and screaming "robbed" every change they get fail to recognize that 1) Masi was within the rules according to article 48.13 and article 15.3, and that "any" and "all" can have different meanings. But who cares about that. 2) More importantly, regardless if Masi followed normal procedure and let lapped cars by earlier, or let ALL lapped cars by when he allowed only 5 to go through, Max still is right behind LH with fresh softs. Pretty much every team and driver behind Max and Lewis has a right to complain, but we don't hear any of that. The only cars in correct position at the restart were Max and Lewis, and yet somehow people want to say it's a robbery against LH. I won't bother explaining that LH failed to defend well on the final lap because that will never get acknowledged by the LH fans screaming "robbed" or "rigged".

At least for me watching the race live when Race Control stated all lapped cars could not overtake the Safety Car the pretty much locked it for Lewis and would have resulted in a (boring) end to the race but within what most people expected given the statement from Race Control - When at the last minute they changed their minds (well, Masi changed HIS mind) and allowed specific cars to pass the Safety Car then it became an (exciting) one-lap sprint for the championship and I certainly was surprised. So if you were rooting for Lewis you were devastated / if you were rooting for Max you were thrilled / if you didn't know either and didn't know F1 then it was at least exciting - and given the difference in tires it was pretty much inevitable that Max would overtake Lewis barring either driver making a mistake.

    Cheers :)

You disappoint. I was hoping for at least an excerpt from the Oxford English Dictionary with alternate meanings of the word "script."

Setting that aside, since you so strongly believe Masi robbed ham of a WDC, what MOTIVE would Masi have to do so??

So if you really want to start a stretched out conspiracy theory, one could ask/suggest that the "timing" of Latifi's crash seemed suspect - I am not saying or suggesting (gosh I hope not) that any driver would intentionally wad an F1 car - BUT one could consider the facts that 1) from a Latifi/Williams standpoint nobody cared/cares - 2) Not like they have another race to get the car ready for - 3) the location and nature of the crash was "controllable" and (thank goodness) Latifi was unhurt - You could REALLY stretch things and suggest that Williams/Latifi/RB/Masi were all in cahoots - Chew on this for a while - Should be fun :)

    Cheers!

Mazepin faked a positive COVID test so that Mick would be in a position to punt Latifi on cue.

Hey Diamond Dog - Glad that you are showing interest in F1 and appreciate the humility. By no means am I an expert (however there are several true experts on FChat so we have a wealth of knowledge on here - as well as passionate and sometimes opposing views as you are seeing - all good :) )

FWIW my suggestion is to access some books and videos that span the history of F1 in relatively succinct and palatable formats. This can fill in a lot of gaps and give you a good basis to build on as you lay various layers of detail on top of the basics. F1 is a VERY complex sport and VERY interesting but sometimes confusing culture and history - but that is what makes it awesome IMHO. As far as "the rules" - heck the people who write them and enforce them don't fully understand them so it might be interesting to delve into them but I would not recommend starting there.

To answer your question on DRS in simplistic terms (as stated by another response earlier - certainly not talking down to you or insulting your intelligence) - "DRS" stands for Drag Reduction System - it is essentially a flap/opening on the rear wing of the car that the driver can open to reduce drag (the air flows THROUGH the wing instead of against it thus resulting in additional straight line speed but at the expense of downforce) - First, Race Control must "Enable" (allow actually) DRS which usually takes place in the early laps of the race - then if a car is within a certain distance (I believe generally 1 second) of the car ahead and within a pre-described DRS "Zone" the trailing driver can open the flap and attempt to overtake the leading car. Supposedly makes for more passing/overtaking resulting in more exciting racing.

Hope this helps a bit - Again, F1 is amazing, exciting and IMHO the pinnacle of motorsport - BUT it comes with confusion, history, passion and controversy.

    Welcome to the mania :)

Masi and race control and the stewards did what was best for the sport and the race. A single last lap battle. It was a great spectacle that came down to tires. Merc didn’t want to give up track position and RB gambled. The only way this race could have turned out ANY better is if Elton Hamdashian and Max Vercrashin would have taken each other out of the race at that last turn of the last lap. The only way that could have been any better is if they then had a knife fight to determine the champion.

Did you not hear the audio? Masi's motivation was he wanted to "go racing". So the broke the rules.

So not to jump to far into this bar fight :) But isn't the entire purpose of F1 (or any other form of competitive motorsport) to "Go Racing"? Isn't that ultimately why drivers risk their lives and teams spend countless hours gaining sponsorship and sponsors spend countless $$ to put their names on cars and uniforms etc. etc.? Without "Going Racing" then it is all moot - Thoughts?

First race of 2022, Bahrain. Pick any stage of the race. Lets say mid race. You have a situation of lapped cars in between the top 2 drivers. Do you think Masi should hand pick a few cars to unlap themselves? If so why? If not why?

Yes. That's why they were racing since the first lap. In fact Hamilton and Max was racing majority of the race as they were 1-2. Actually Hamilton overtook more cars and did more racing than Max. All Max did was make pitstops all day. But do you know what's more important than racing? Safety. That's why SC rules have been consistent all year, until Masi went off script and broke......I mean overrode the rules.

The rules are for lapped cars to be unlapped, they could interfere with cars on the lead lap. Also the safety car was suppose to allow another lap for extra precaution of track being cleared etc.
