    To answer my own request, I found this pic which shows the later style spark pug cover (4 mounting holes on bottom edge), and it seems to have the "cinquevalvole" marking, but I can't tell if they are cast-in, raised letters or a silkscreen (that could be lost in a repaint):

    I think it’s been modified as I said I believe they were all that way from factory

    I would say they were sanded off

    when we refinish them we sand the paint off after the refinish and it gives them the aluminum color

    nice screamer engine for that car

    But how so? -- had cast-in raised letters machined off then repainted, just repainted (so a painted /silkscreened marking would be lost), something else?

    I would think you could sand them off without much trouble
    I have refinished mine 3 times for each touch up when engine was out. I don’t see that would be much trouble

    After all I've learned I now suspect that the raised letters were machined off - why, I don't know.

    A guess would be so it looked more original even though it’s v8 instead of a 12
    Car looks cool though
