Hi All, New to the group and value all the information and collaboration. I have found a Ferrari that I like and would like to pull the trigger. I know the market is hot now and I'm sure many would say to wait it out, but, I like the car, and now seems right for me. To that end, I was wondering if there are some negotiating points I should be aware of or try to get some more value. 1. Does one pay the dealer asking price? Can I expect a discount? If so, how much? Strategy to achieve this? 2. Other things to ask for? Swapping tires for different ones? PPF? Extended warranty? Shipping at dealer expense? Anything else? 3. Would anyone feel comfortable buying a CPO car (warranty and maintenance 2years) from a dealer from out of state without seeing it personally (the car I'm considering is across the country and I generally feel the dealers are generally reputable and want to provide a quality product and experience)? If so, would there be some strategies to use to ensure receiving a car that one anticipates (having it shipped to my local dealer to have it thoroughly evaluated and any issues paid for by the selling dealer, or would the fact that the car comes with a warranty be sufficient and take care of any issues anyway?) 4. Anything else anyone can think of that ask for would be greatly appreciated! Really looking forward to this experience and joining the ranks! Thank you all in advance !
Welcome to the Forum! I'll answer yours inquires based on the Questions #'s 1/2. In the current climate, with most recent transactions that my close friends have had in the last few weeks, maybe you can get up to $5K off the asking price. More than likely, they won't give you a discount so then ask for 2 year extended warranty for the price of 1 which would put you back at the $5K mark. If the car has been sitting there for over a month then most likely its a consignment car and the longer its been sitting there the more likely they'll deal with you. The shipping usually can be thrwon in there which is at least 2K across the country. There is no need for them to swap out tires for the sale unless you're gonna pay for them. I wouldn't recommend getting them to do the PPF since you have no recourse if it doesn't meet your expectations plus there is value in getting a local guy to do the work as you can monitor the progress. 3. If it's Ferrari CPO, you don't have to worry about the purchase. Personally, I would fly out and check the car out in person. It's worse losing a few hundred bucks on a flight to give you the paece of mind. Unlikely that you can have the car inspected locally and have them pay for issues after the fact that you've already paid for it. Good luck!
no certain rule book. I think it's reasonable to ask for 5-10% off from the asking price as the starting point. Just know they get countless tire kickers daily, and that will manifest in different ways through different sales personalities. CPO or not, I would go look at the car in person. Last few times I bought a car, I talked on the phone with the owner directly. My flying out tells him I'm serious and gives me an opportunity to confirm the owner's descriptions. If there is a bothersome discrepancy between the owner's description and the car, I may ask for something in return then or just walk away. You can also tell so much just by being with the car & the owner. Some treat the car like it's their own child. Some treat it like a pair of shoes.
I think getting as much history on the car as possible could help your cause. I spotted an F12 that really caught my attention when the market was heating up in March. The dealer that had it wasn't really interested in taking my 430 in trade, so before I could sell the 430 and buy the F12, Ferrari Lake Forest snapped it up and marked up the price by $30k. I told Lake Forest that I was aware of the price they paid for it (Naples told me they sold it for list price) and that I might still be interested, but their markup was a little hard to stomach. They dropped the price by $5k, added a CPO warranty and free shipping and I had the rare color & options I really wanted. Maybe they saw me coming, but I couldn't be happier. It is a 2013 that had 7,200 mi on the clock, so I felt the CPO prep by a Ferrari dealer would find any issues a PPI would uncover, but there were a few minor issues I had to contend with. While the car overall was in excellent condition, the rpm LEDs on the steering wheel did not work and the backup camera was intermittent, so those items got missed (not sure I would have discovered these on my own) The CPO warranty did come in handy though, as the capless fuel filler seal failed on the first fillup. Fixing it took 3 trips to Ferrari Scottsdale to get it completely sorted under warranty which I feel would have been pretty expensive if I had to handle on my own. Let us know how you make out.
I am also searching for another Ferrari at the moment and to be honest, almost nobody wants to negotiate the price, at least from the dealers I have contacted in the last 2 months. The market at the moment seems so strong, that they just refuse to negotiate. I have never experienced such a thing before.
best of luck on your purchase I have purchased many cars sight unseen now days the dealers can post plenty of picture and if it is a cpo car I would not worry about going to see it unless you want to ... Regarding price no reason not to make an offer fro less than asking price ... I always ask for new tires from a dealer if the car is more than 4 years old .. I would also ask for a new battery and I prefer the dealer to ship the car to me that way it is his responsibility .. now if it is through a person I don't ask for anything other then better price if possible ... I have never had a dealer turn those things down.. for info .. .. I also ask via email for a copy of the care fax and any and all service records and I ask them to confirm the car was never wrecked or painted via email I like things in writing ...I try to handle all communication VIA email to keep everything in writing and I have never had a problem I will tell you the F12 is a great car ...
Two things I would ask and check. Is it a dealer owned car or consignment. If consignment (my assumption) you may have more wiggle room on price, if dealer you probably have more on warranty. I would buy sight unseen but have them take close ups of seats and way more importantly around the the areas in the back and front where the mesh touches the body (vents). Mine, like others here, had paint bubbling front the different metals not being painted well enough. I have heard some dealers pushing back on fixing and that could be expensive. Apologies if already mentioned…I didn’t read through all the post in detail. Good luck….it’s a fabulous car.
Must have the vents removed and the area fixed. If it has not been done then it will need it during your ownership. This should be covered under a CPO but I would get that in writing no matter what. Forget the 10% discount someone here said. Not going to happen. These cars were $400k new so watch your greed. Its all about spec, condition, and service history. If it has those and low miles pay up or it will be gone before you get serious. This is a special car to own.
The F12 is a great car and I bought one about 6 months ago. Everyone has given good advice. Here's what I do when I buy a car from far away: 1. Get thorough pics, assessment of the car, carfax, service records, etc. Does it have all the accessories? MSRP sticker? When owners keep all the stuff, they generally take good care of their cars. 2. I try to negotiate the price before I go out to see the car. In today's environment, I would think most dealers are firm on the price. However, a car on consignment certainly has more play in the price. If it's a dealer owned car, probably not much discount. As others have said, try to get a deal on extended warranty etc. If you go there and then negotiate, they have slightly more leverage on you. If you agree on price before you go, you can still try to make adjustments if the car isn't what was described. To me, there's no use to go see the car if it's not at the price you are comfortable paying. 3. If the car is at a Ferrari dealer, I generally like to have them either service it or at least change the oil and put in a new battery before they ship it to me. These things always have dead or dying batteries. Then the car is going to be good for a while for you to enjoy. CPO is good, but you should read it carefully, the latest CPO language basically doesn't cover any leaks of any kind. So if the head gasket is leaking or the DCT is leaking, etc it's not covered. 4. Be sure to check for the common problems of the F12, mainly corrosion around the rear vents, DCT leaking, leather shrinkage around the dash, sticky buttons, etc. Good luck!
In today's climate........don't procrastinate. Be quick and decisive or lose out. Ask me how I know. I missed out to sunghyun7on a stunning car that was my perfect spec. I called less than 12 hours after he put a deposit down. Through the fantastic nature of Fchat, we PM'd about the car and he helped me make my decision to jump on another one that was a little less perfect on the spec but close enough. It's the nature of car buying now, this climate. I had to do the same when I bought my Tesla. I got tired of waiting for my ordered '22 and shopped used. A guy put one on Autotrader and said he has 4 inquires in 6 hours of it going live (he showed me the messages). Had to pull the trigger asap or lose out so I wired him the money straight away, flew out to get the car the next day. Good time to be a seller for sure. How long will this climate last.....who knows? But it won't be anytime soon and you'll miss out on years of pleasure waiting. IMO, pull the trigger and enjoy. Good luck! *edit*.....^ is all after you do your due diligence about the car's condition of course. Stickies, leather shrinkage, corrosion around rear vents, etc as Eric360 mentioned
Opps.....the Fchatter who bought the car I wanted was Flea7, not sunghyun7. Not that it matters but I didn't want sunghyun7 left thinking "wtf is he talking about?". lol
Jim.........LOL. Your F12 looks stellar!!!! It was higher mileage then I wanted but the spec was what I was looking for. Nero race seats w/red stitching ..leather/alcantara interior...carbon everything...front lift...rear camera.....triple paint option..PPF on the whole car...etc. I was on vacation in Hawaii when a friend texted me the advertisement Saturday morning. I believe it was listed the day before on Friday. I call the dealership that morning. When I got back to the office the following Monday I called again. We negotiated on a price w/ a down payment paid. As Eric360 listed on post #9, I pretty much did what he pointed out in advice #2. I scheduled a PPI the following Wednesday and flew out 6am that same day.....purchased the car and got back home at 1am. Slept like a baby! I guess the point Jim and I are trying to make is if you find one that you like ...don't delay. For me due to the higher mileage I had some negotiation room. I disclosed to my PPI mechanic what I paid for the car and he said I stole it ! I love the Car! You won't be disappointed with the F12. Good Luck!
Stole it you did. I don’t think the dealership really understood what they had. I paid quite a bit more for a less spec’d car but I think at our purchase prices, we’re both in the green in just a few short months.

I know I bang on about this in our PM's but, I cry a little every time I see your car. lol I love the spec so much. So glad it is the hands of a good owner.
Thanks Jim, I have CF diffusers coming in. CF engine panels are in the works. Kline Xpipe, gutted cats, and Mase tune to install this week. More pics of the interior. TDF metal floor plates are going in soon as well. The TDF rings were the first mod. ...sorry OP for thread jack. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Interested to hear about your exhaust and tune results. I’d like to do Kline 200 cell cat pipes, X pipe, and Mass tune. Love the rings. Might have to hit up Jeremy and get a set. Sorry to the OP too. But that should tell you the joys of F12 ownership. We like to turn every thread into a discussion about the car.
1. Most are paying asking price / dealership owned or consignment. 2. Are you asking for things just to ask, or is there a reason you are asking? a. Tires - No b. PPF - No, have someone local to you do it unless you know the installer where its being sold c. Yes, you can ask what it would take to get 2 years of Power Warranty added ** d. Shipping, you can ask.. . but don't expect it. They can wait for a local buyer and not lose that money. Besides, don't you want to DRIVE it back ? e. Ask for a really nice detail with paint correction, can only help! 3. Yes, but still do your due diligence. Make sure your expectations are set correctly. A CPO car does not mean it's 100% perfect, ask for the completed check list so you understand exactly what was checked and its condition. A CPO car is still a PRE OWNED car, so it will have its imperfections. 4. Check to see if rear 1/4 panel vents have been refinished yet. Condition of leather , drying or shrinking? Already been replaced? Soft Touch buttons, free of tackiness? Service History, after-all it came with 7 years of free services, so it shouldn't be hard to track that. ** Be sure to understand what is and is not covered by New Power Warranty / Main Power Warranty. There is a lot of misinformation out there. For example HEAD GASKETS are a covered item where-as Valve Cover gaskets are not. There is a brochure availble that outlines coverage in black and white for owners as needed! Hope this helps, Steve PM me the last 6, I will see what I can find for you in MODIS
