I just took off my Novitec, 100 Cell & X-Pipe for a smog on my TDF. Honestly, I nearly cried... The stock sound was so disappointing...! I really want to get my Pista to howl like a Ferrari.. At the moment it sounds like a monotonal flat fart!
I'm considering Kline sport cat downpipes with valve controller. With keeping the OEM rear muffler, which cats should I go with? 100 cell or 200 cell? I will get the O2 sensor adapters either way.
Interested to hear what you end up with. On my Speciale, 200 cats were fine, 100 cats triggered CEL including a message that’s something like “cat temp out of range”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Trust me. I have spent countless of money on exhaust. The power and the sound is always in the cars>muffler>x pipe. I did a full kline on my ff and it wasn’t any good till the cats. Xpipe give like 2-5hp according to kline and won’t change much sound wise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I may agree later this week, but a lot of people have put an X pipe on the 488s with success. I’m not looking for more sound per se, just a different one. If I need cats, then I will do cats. I would think eliminating the straight pipe and adding some tubing with the X blend will do something.
This is exactly what I thought until I tried it. The X-Pipe alone actually makes a big difference in tone. I speak from personal first hand experience on my own car. @Lagunae92 -- I think you will generally be happy with the sound. Downpipes just make it a louder, but come with a bit of a headache of getting the lambda sensors not to trigger @Phillychoi -- Responded to you offline regarding your question. I do think that you will find the downpipes alone won't do it for you. I had that exact same setup. To my ears, the car sounded a lot better OEM. It was notably louder with downpipes, but the additional flow rate into the OEM silencer does something weird with the resonances. An x-pipe fixed it right up though. If I were to do it again, I would either stick with the full OEM system + valve controller OR 200 Cells, O2 spacers, and an x-pipe system with no flaps [this is my current setup].
Try it first. You just might like how it sounds as exhaust note is really subjective. If it's not what you were looking for, add high flow cats. I have the inconel Kline system with 200 cell cats and it sounds great. It did trigger the CEL, so had to get a Capristo OBD module to address it.
I’m not necessarily looking for more sound…yet. Just a different sound. Higher highs, and more focus to it. A different harmonic series.
The Pista I heard with a Novi X sounded very good. Not really louder but definitely a broader range of frequencies. Before playing with cats, just think about the noise if you track it etc. I've heard some cars with some big HJS 200 cell cats as well and that was very nice. Very open sound but without being stupidly loud. I believe Fabspeed sells them for the F8 and Pista. Despite their high flow, they are Euro 6 certified and should not trigger any CEL. Try these if you feel you need more. https://www.fabspeed.com/ferrari-488-pista-sport-catalytic-converters/ Not sure, but I do believe Capristobalsovoffers a 200 cell cat. But you need to verify whether it's 100 or 200 cell. Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Capristo has two kinds of 200 cell. One is supposed to act like a cat delete in a sense, being very free flowing. I’ll have to look into the science if need be. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Kline does offer a 200 cell, but it's a hit and miss. It throws a CEL on some cars and not on some. It did trigger a CEL on mine. It does sound great though. lol.
I like that the Kline is Inconel, but I’ll have to look into the fitment. Fabspeed guarantees not to throw a cel, so maybe they at least have the workaround. I guess I’ll find out Friday what it sounds like as is.
As you mentioned two options, I decided not to install the downpipes only and stay OEM with just valve controller(already installed). Plus downpipe install was much harder than I expected(DIY) so I gave up installing in case of warranty work. That being said I will be selling brand new Kline 200 cell downpipes. PM me if anyone is interested. I will sell them much cheaper than retail plus no wait time.(4~6 weeks)
Or you get your money back. Sounds very worthwhile to me. My TDF has Novitec with 100 cell and X pipes. Sounds like a noise from the gods! Throws codes all the time. So I just recently took it off to have it smogged… very annoying!! May the Horse be with you
