It's all different. You can say Senna's car was a dream compared to Clark's car. The eras are different. Past cars were more physical. But today's cars are in some ways more difficult to drive, like the driver mental workload is higher, the g forces are higher, more races require the driver to be fit the majority of the season. I don't think Mazepin or Perez is having a nice dream everytime they drive. Yes Hamilton's first championship car 15 years ago was vastly different than Max's car, that's just the evolution of the sport.

Who are the bravest drivers of all time? Graham Hill, Clark, Phil Hill, Fangio, Stewart, Senna.
Most brilliant drivers? Prost, Schumacher, Lauda, Hamilton, Graham Hill.

    Apples and oranges, IMHO.

    Agreed.

Last season made me a Sainz fan (and I was "disappointed" when Carlos joined the Scuderia).

Add Lauda to the list of bravest drivers of all time as well (returning to F1 a few weeks after the Nürburgring crash)

In that matter, do not forget Mika Häkkinen's come back after Adelaïde's 1995 accident. I remember an Alain Prost interview in which he said that it was one of the bravest thing he could remember in the F1 world. But like most things with Mika, very understated by the man himself.

Wait, Senna is not among the most brilliant?!?

I would also add Nelson Piquet:
1- He was faster than Lauda according to Bernie Ecclestone.
2- After two years in F1, became champion with a simple Brabham.
3- First champion with a turbocharged engine, only champion with a BMW engine (1200hp during qualy).
4- Raced against and defeated Prost, Lauda, Mansell, and Senna.
5- First champion with a Honda engine.

He definitely should be among the most brilliant.

I've always admired Jackie Stewart so I'd put him in the brave category. The descriptions of his accident at Spa and the almost total lack of any marshals, safety, medical, evacuation, etc are just incredible to imagine, as was all racing in the 50s and 60s.

This is still close to the range I mentioned as some races the gap was 2 seconds. I'm glad you posted these numbers, your research shows just how closer these new cars are in competition compared to the past. At one point Sennas car was 3 seconds faster than 5th place. When Schumacher started there were times where the gap was 10 seconds!
I found one example of many:
    Germany 1995
    Damon Hill WILLIAMS RENAULT 1:44.385
    Giovanni Lavaggi PACIFIC ILMOR 1:54.625

Your high end range was outside the average even lol. But lets not get basic math confused eh?

You've brought up these daft numbers before, and I'll ask you the same thing now as I did then, why do you keep comparing the cars that started first vs last, as if they where competition of each other? The only competition is between the fastest 2 teams, occasionally there's a 3rd or even 4th (very rare) involved in a championship fight. How slow and incompetent the last team is has no relevance at all to the dominance or cars beaten by the fastest car/driver.

I respectfully disagree with you on the Greatest of all time. - there is one... Jackie Stewart. and He's still alive - which is the good news.
I dont think todays drivers are anywhere close to the greatest... they may be the ones with the most wins, but certainly not the best. Most of them dont or cant drive around problems, its Far safer today, and the cars are much easier & reliable to drive. the further you look back in History - the better the drivers are ... BECAUSE they HAD TO BE to SURVIVE. Its much like the cars ...the best cars are the ones that are raw and powerful and are frankly awsome..... same with Drivers.

I don't mean to disparage todays drivers - they are all very good and are at the top of the world of racing, but in comparison ... drivers from the late 60's to early 90's are by far the very best that ever lived. The Driver that exhibits that the most is Stewart... and he drove all cars - and won ... F-1, INDY, CAN AM, Sports Cars, Trans AM, etc... much like Andretti - only way more successful. After that I'd say its a toss between Clark and Fangio.

Piquet is an interesting case indeed...I have to say I do agree with your arguments, no question; and nevertheless I somehow still have "mixed feelings" about him, probably due to him being only barely average - at best - during his time at Lotus, and also his - to me at least - rude behavior towards some of his peers. His remarks casting doubts about Senna, about Mansell's wife, etc...have no doubt diminished his legacy for me. The results are here, the man, well...

Oh, and by the way: there is one BIG OMISSION in the two lists, either the brillants OR/AND the brave...

    One Stirling Moss...

True. But they all were brave at the time, weren't they?
Anybody here remembers Denny Hulme's ordeal in 1970? His hands so badly burnt by methanol in a test with an Indy Car that he couldn't even hold a newspaper for weeks, then just after surgery, he learnt that his best friend and mentor Bruce McLaren has been killed? And Denny decided that he had to race to support the team and help it to "pull itself toghether" this despite his burned hands and the surgeons having told him that he will not be allowed to put racing gloves for three months? At the end of his first race after the accident, he needed outisde assistance to pull off his gloves slowly away, and they were peeling the skin from his hands...

Please tell me you are not serious. How tight a field is, affects the top driver as well. Drivers have to deal with backmarkers when they pit. When they strategize etc.
When they have a mishap. They even have to push less if lower teams are no threat. All of this affect a driver stats. You know this. How does a driver who's has a 10 sec field difference, has the same difficulty as a driver with a tighter 3 second difference? We disagree on Hamilton, but I know you are knowledgeable on F1. You know this, I don't why you are disagreeing with me.

Really hope Romain will do great things in Indycar.
I like him very much. ( Even after his massive crash in Spa 2012 which certainly cost us the championship ..)

After he ended his career, Piquet himself has said many times that his crash at Tamburello messed up with his brain and he would never be fast again. That being said, even though Lotus was crap, he ended up in a respectable position on the championship and crushed his team mate.

In regard to his antics, I found it pretty funny by watching those old Youtube videos:
"Nelson, what's the difference between you and Mansell?" "He plays golf, I play tennis, his likes ugly women, I like them beautiful, he lost 3 championships, I won 3":D:D:D

Who cares! but if you want an answer:: anyone who raced before Stewart got safety rules improved was braver than everyone of the last 30 years.
That goes double for the pre-war Formulas.

His crash at the Indy 500 pretty much finished him off (although he came back to the Brickyard a couple years later to race in the Indy 500 a final time).
