Thats true, but I think our CO2 output still can't cope, and 100 years ago may have been a low base, I don't know. Our planet has been through far worse indeed but it was before we were around (or close to that) and we have massive populated areas that may not cope with the forecast outcomes!

In part (96%) because in the past atmospheric CO2 has always increased as temperatures increase (it's a by-product of warming, not the cause) and in part (4%) because we're producing it faster than existing mechanisms can absorb it. The latter is helping increase vegetation cover on the earth though.

I would prefer the world to burn less coal, but the countries who burn 2/3rds of it are China and India and neither are interested in reducing their economic growth. One irony is that they burn coal to make the electricity to manufacture solar panels, which we buy to "save the planet". 15 years later, they go to land fill.

There's another dark side to cheap manufacturing in China and India which worries me. Just walk by any household rubbish collection (when people put out broken appliances and junk for council pick up) and note how much is made in China. Europe is doing a much better job of mandating recyclability in manufactured products. PP's BMW i3 is made of old shoe boxes for example

(see Klink, I've brought it back to miscellaneous car news :D)

    I didn't know that.

I knew it was quite recyclable though.

I'm disappointed that not only have they stopped making them, but they're not replacing it with any sort of equivalent model.

I think there is way too much waste in society today. Eventually if they want their people to survive India and China will have to pull their heads in. They are choking in their own emissions. The China GP can't go ahead if there is too much smog for the medic to fly. I just can't see we can keep going on like this and expect everything to be rosey. To me it just doesn't make sense mate!

yes that was my point... There have been events in history that make what we're doing in comparison quite trivial. The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, for example, was relatively small compared to other events which came prior.

No doubt we'll obliterate ourselves well before the environment does, but the earth will rebound quite nicely once we're not longer around.

Everything eventually ends anyway. Heat death of the universe and all that. In the meantime, party on Wayne and party on Garth.

Shouldn't we be more worried about the rights of transvestite college swimmers and when the new iPhone is coming out?

I got an amusing lesson in how wasteful we are today, while at the same time a reminder of the corresponding virtue-signalling that companies do (because they go hand in hand).

I have a pair of Bose QC35II headphones that I bought about two and a half years ago. Not cheap. Love them.
However, they no longer make any sound out of the left ear.
So, I drove half an hour today to what is listed as the only Bose repairer in Adelaide to get them fixed.
Thought it would be as simple as fixing a wire (and I bet it is)...

Guess what? The guy said that Bose will not fix them.
    "Ummm. Why?", I said.

He then proceeded to tell me that instead of fixing them Bose will give me a discount on a new set of headphones, but the good news is that my existing ones will be crushed "sustainably" and then certain bits may be re-used. It was sold as a win for the environment.

    WTF?

I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't. End result is I now have a new pair of $500 headphones coming (at a discount) and I have to send my nearly new $400 ones off to go through this process.

What a joke the world has become.
