You are missing the point here. Ferrari uses the old FIA nomenclature, whereas all racing cars based on a road car are classified as GTs. Even the LaFerrari (surely not a GT) is classified as a GT in Ferrari's literature. That was in order to distinguish them from prototypes and single seaters. So, is the 488 GT3 race car a GT?

I’d love to hear @Marcel Massini and @Nembo1777 opinions on whether the FUV fits in with the ethos of Ferrari. Is the FUV just an evolution of the 2+2 gran touring Ferrari built to help finance other operations at the Factory, such as racing and supercars? It basically will be offered as a V12 powered 2+2 that no doubt will be beautiful, luxurious, fast, rare and expensive. The evolution is adding the 2 rear diminutive doors and increasing the ride height a few inches. Is it in effect the 2022 evolution of the 1960 Superamerica?

Well, one of us is missing the point ;)

I originally made the statement that I don’t believe an SUV is a departure from Ferrari ethos. I backed that up by pointing out that Ferrari has a long history of selling luxury (GT) cars to fund their racing (sport prototypes), and that the fast cars we all love benefited from the revenue Ferrari made off the heavier alternatives they sold.

You tried to offer a counter to my statement by asking what I thought the 166 was. A bit snarky but OK. I answered that the 166 was a GT and provided evidence (you know, because it is). So basically you tried to counter my point that Ferrari was built by selling GTs with a GT. Bold strategy but not sure it’s the approach I would have taken.

I agree things get a bit murky around the 1970s and 80s (and onward) as Ferrari has diversified their range. I mentioned that in my earlier post and gave the Testarossa as an example. That’s why the first link I provided was not from Ferrari. That being said, there is no ambiguity in Ferrari’s history. The non competition cars sold were proper GTs. That’s not my opinion, that’s how they’re classified in the industry (please see the first link I provided…happy to provide more if Google isn’t your thing). That’s why I still feel an SUV is perfectly in line with Ferrari’s history (backing the the original point that seems to be missed).

I’ll also caveat this by saying I don’t plan to buy the Purosangue but will hold judgment until I see the final product. I’m generally not a fan of SUVs but loved the Lusso. If the Purosangue is a compelling mix of the two with a lovely V12 then I can be persuaded. It seems Ferrari has little difficulty when twisting my rubber arm.

I don't have a problem with the Purosangue, I am not thrilled about it either though.
My point is that the first Ferrari road cars were not GTs, as we know them today. Thy were road versions of racing cars. That's how sports cars were back then. The mid-engined supercar came later. They just called any fast road car a GT back then.
By FIA rules a 488 GT3 is a GT racer. Do we agree with such a definition though?

Flattered that you would mention me in the same sentence as Marcel but he will respond for himself if he chooses to.

As far as I am concerned the Ferrari universe is very large and I am focused on classics and racing, I don't even pay attention to post seventies cars except for BB's, the last one I like is the 575 Superamerica.
I can't tell the recent models one from the other because they just don't interest me, I am a classicist through and through, though the 296 has a much cleaner design than the origami specials. Regarding the SUV just copy and paste the not so happy comments of those Porschists and later Maseratists when the Cayenne and later the Levante were introduced: same difference. No further interest in this discussion, sorry and all the best.

As in pre-ordered?…tons of people (including me) and demand is through the roof…my local dealer told me he has over 30 pre-orders.
I spoke to some of the factory people recently, they think that given demand and expected production it will be very difficult to get hold of a car for the first 2 years…

I’ve got a couple of ideas.

What do you guys think: will it be over-the-top outré or more classic? Or as classic as a never-before-done SUV from Ferrari can be. GTO bread van influence maybe ;)

I’m going to guess Switzerland, in 10 months time it’ll be either November/December and the snowy terrain will be perfect to show what the car is capable of while fitting into the Ferrerista’s lifestyle.
