I did the Texas 1000 Vintage Rallie in 2006, and it was top shelf the whole way. Rich and Jean have deep car connections through their many years working with car magazines, etc. They got is into David Mitchell's studio in Marfa Texas, to see his work with cutaway's for car magazines. We finished at Jim Hall's Chaparral office and racetrack complex outside Midland Texas, and then he spoke to the group at the Chaparral Museum in town. We had some great cars and collectors in our group of 30, including a 60's Green Ferrari that had been owned by Enzo. It was there with the director of the Collier's Collection in Naples Florida.

I was there with Bill Neale, a car artist / advertising exec, who was Shelby's best friend from the 50's on. He had his Terlingua Mustang there, and he called Shelby from Terlingua while we were there. He also designed the angry bunny logo for the Terlingua Racing Team.

I know any of their events will be epic, as every detail is taken car of. You leave your bags outside the hotel, and they put it in the luggage truck, and have it in your room at the next stop. We had 6 new Porsche vehicles to drive either for fun, or if your car broke down. I got some bad fuel in Terlingua on the last day, and had have it trailered to our final stop back in Midland. We had a new 911 for that part of the run. They have a truck and trailer with you the whole time, as well as a mechanic's truck to help with any easy fixes.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Malcolm! I was wondering if that was you and your Giallo Daytona I saw in some of the pictures on their website. Very cool, and what cars in some of these pictures... holy smokes. The only thing I was wondering about was the dirt I saw some of the cars driving and parked on. Having Julie drive the F40 on any dirt road would ...lol, not that any of the cars are concours. Have you done Autobahn Adventure? We may have to pass on ours and I have it listed under this forum.

BTW and not that you are trying to set a record, I bet no one else has driven a 275 or Daytona across America multiple times like you have. That's so cool. Thanks for the thumbs up for Vintage Rallies, we are considering it.

I was hoping Malcolm would pipe up.

I meet Malcolm for the first time at the first Ferrari French Quarter Classic in New Orleans. He had driven the yellow Daytona from San Diego to the Crescent City. He entered the concourso without brothering to clean the bugs off the car. He was explaining how to judge a Daytona to the judges, who were very appreciative. I said, "That's my kinda guy."

Although I have not done as many as Malcolm, my son and I or my wife and I have done 14 Vintage Rallies beginning in 2009 - Texas 1000, Mountain Mille, Southwest Passage. This is absolutely the most fun I have had in a car since I was 17 or 18. The roads are all paved; the only time we are on dirt or gravel would be at a check point or perhaps at a resort where we stop overnight (although I only remember one of those ever). We have met some really great car guys who we would have never had occasion to meet otherwise - Malcolm Barksdale, Roland Linder, Miles Collier, Bobby Rahal . . .

If you do one, I bet it won't be your last!
